The global health crisis has forced the cancelation of many a graduation ceremony.

In a potent 10-minute speech, she uplifted, encouraged, and celebrated the graduates.

Deeply personal, she drew on her own narrative –  the highs, the lows, and the challenges – including starting Parkwood Entertainment and owning her masters. She also addressed the calls for justice over the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery:

Key Quotes:

“The killings of George Floyd,  Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and so many others has left us all broken. We’ve [also] seen that our collective hearts – when put to positive action – can start the wheels of change”

“The entertainment business is still very sexist. To run my label & management company, to direct my films, and produce my tours. That meant ownership. Owning my masters. Owning my art. Owning my future. And writing my own story.”

********

“If you’ve ever been called dumb, unattractive, overweight, unworthy, untalented. Well, so have I. Whatever you do, don’t let negativity of those projecting their own fears on you deter you from your focus.”

********

“Every human-being is born with a masterful gift. Don’t make the world make you think you have to look a certain way to be brilliant.”
