Ciara Reflects on How Her #1 Hit ‘Goodies’ Almost Went to Britney Spears

Published: Friday 28th Aug 2020 by Rashad

Longtime Ciara fans may think her history with Britney Spears is only limited to the Pop icon’s 2009 ‘Circus Tour’ (where Cici served as the opening act), but the new mom-of-three (click here to read more) recently revealed they go back even further.

As we reported here, the 34-year-old is the host of Apple Music’s new ‘Level Up Radio’ – a series designed to examine R&B’s cultural impact and evolution.  When reflecting on her early experiences in the industry, she reported her breakthrough hit, 2004’s ‘Goodies,’ was almost a chart win for her ‘Baby One More Time’-singingmate.

Taking to her new radio show, Cici revealed:

“When I had this record, I knew that it was a very, very special record,” Ciara said of the Crunk track produced by Lil Jon. “And I worked so hard on this record and this industry can sometimes bring you incredible challenges, hence why I love the power of having my own record label” (referring to her 2019-launched imprint Beauty Marks Entertainment).

Continuing, Ci stated:

“And when [I] went to Jive [Records], I had the song ‘Goodies.’ I had to re-audition again, to be picked up and to be made a priority on the label. I did that, had a showcase, rocked it. Okay, boom, check. Had this record, but not knowing that behind the scenes, there was a conversation about this song being potentially taken from me and given to an artist like Britney Spears, who was on the same roster as me,” she said.

Although she claims she was unaware of the conversation at the time it was happening, that doesn’t mean she wouldn’t have put up a fight had she known about it.

“I learned about the story later, but the crazy thing for me is that if I would’ve known about it then, I would have fought tooth and nail. It was because it’s a record that I actually was a part of creating,” she said. “I was heavily involved in the writing side of it as well.”

All’s well that ends well.

‘Goodies’ not only introduced the masses to the then-teenage Ciara, but also blasted her to #1 on the Hot 100 (where she stayed for seven weeks).

As of time reported, the song – her signature hit – remains her only claim to the tally’s top spot.

P.S. I suppose if we had to imagine what it would sound like, our girl/comedienne Franchesca Leigh came through with the assist.
