Hot 100: BTS Bump Cardi B & Megan Thee Stallion’s #WAP From #1 With Biggest First-Week Sales of the Year

Published: Monday 31st Aug 2020 by Rashad

Explosive indeed;  BTS‘Dynamite’ has blasted Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion‘s historic #1 hit, ‘WAP,’ from the top of the Billboard Hot 100.

Details inside:

2020 has been a year for the Hot 100 record books for sure and thanks to K-Pop titans BTS that trend shows no sign of slowing.

As of Sunday (August 30), only 42 songs had debuted at #1 on the Hot 100 since its unveiling in 1958 (B & Stallion’s ‘WAP’ being the seventh to do so this year alone).  Now, two weeks after the Hip Hop duo hit the top of the chart with their history-making hit (as we reported here), they’ve been ousted by the Korean septet and their latest hit, ‘Dynamite.’

Here are its first week numbers:

  • Streaming: 33.9 million U.S. streams
  • Digital Downloads: 300,000 sold
  • Radio Airplay: 11.6 million radio airplay audience impressions

Their first run atop the Hot 100, the group makes history as the first all-Korean composite to reign over the chart.

Moreover, Billboard reports:

With 265,000 downloads sold (among its overall first-week total of 300,000, which includes its vinyl and cassette physical versions), “Dynamite” debuts with the biggest digital sales week since Sept. 16, 2017, when Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” launched with 353,000.

Among groups, “Dynamite” sports the biggest weekly digital sales sum since Prince and the Revolution’s 1984 classic “Purple Rain” sold 282,000 (May 14, 2016), following Prince’s April 21, 2016, passing. Among songs by groups in tracks’ debut weeks, “Dynamite” makes the best digital sales start in five years, since One Direction’s “Drag Me Down” opened with 350,000 (Aug. 22, 2015).”
