Whether penciled in history books for reasons good, bad, ugly, and/or everything in between, 2020 brought with it some of entertainment’s most memorable moments.
Now, as the year draws to a close, we are reflecting on our favorite moments that rocked – and to some degree maybe even reshaped – the Urban and Pop cultural landscape as we know it.
Next, we reflect on the EMMYs most diverse set of nominees and winners to date.

The 72nd Annual EMMY Awards’ nominations were unveiled in July and – to the surprise of many – featured its most extensive tally of Black nominees ever.
As some of 2019 and 2020’s best and brightest TV moments came courtesy of actors of color, the television academy sought to undo years of criticism for overlooking the efforts of Black actors by having performers from series like ‘Pose,’ ‘Euphoria,’ ‘Insecure,’ and more lead the list.

By the end of the ceremony’s September 20 airing, the winner’s list shined with many-a-history making feat. Out of the 18 acting awards handed out at the 72nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards (and Creative Arts EMMYs), nine of them went to Black actors.

Despite the historic highlights, the night’s leading nominee – HBO’s ‘Insecure’ – was shut out of major categories.
The loss was particularly noteworthy for the show’s star and creator, Issa Rae, as a major win would’ve made her the first Black female creator of a premium cable show to receive the ‘Lead Actress’ award as well as the second Black woman to take home a Lead Actress trophy ever (the first handed in 1981 to ‘The Jeffersons’ star Isabel Sanford who portrayed ‘Weezie’).

Though it failed to secure a golden statuette from the Primetime EMMYS, it did land one win in the Outstanding Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series category at Saturday’s (September 19) Creative Arts EMMY ceremony.
