When Mendes introduced Smith’s performance, he consistently referred to the star as a “he.”
Noteworthy as the British belter came out as non binary last year and has expressed a desire to be referenced as “they/them.”
After realizing the mistake, the ‘Wonder’ singer took to social media to say:
“Oh @samsmith I’m sorry for referring to you as a “he” for your jingle ball introduction. It absolutely slipped my mind. Won’t happen again..Sending you so much love ! Also, you absolutely are one of the funniest people I’ve ever met!”
