RIAA: Lauryn Hill’s ‘Miseducation’ Becomes First Female Hip Hop Album Certified Diamond

Published: Wednesday 17th Feb 2021 by Rashad

‘Miseducation of Lauryn Hill’ is already penciled in history books for many feats including being the first female album to sell over 400,000 copies its first week, owning the first female Hip Hop song to debut at #1 on the Hot 100 (1998’s ‘Doo Wop’), owning the first debut song of any genre to premiere at #1 on the Hot 100 (‘Doo Wop’), first and only female Hip Hop album inducted into the Library of Congress, garnering Hill the most GRAMMY nominations of any female artist in one night (10), and making her the first female act to win at least 5 awards in one night including ‘Album of the Year’ (the first Hip Hop album ever to do so).

As if those historic accomplishments weren’t enough, the list of record-setting triumphs seems to have no end in sight as the Recording Industry Association of America revealed Monday (February 16).

Details inside:

Thanks to ongoing commercial acclaim nearly 25 years after its release, ‘Miseducation’ crossed the organization’s threshold for Diamond status – an award that recognizes sales of 10 million in the United States.  The update comes after reports the LP has sold over 20 million worldwide – making it the best-selling female Hip Hop project ever (and one of the best-selling opuses of all-time among all genres).

‘Miseducation’ makes Hill the 13th female act to own at least 1 Diamond album over her career.

Among women of color, Hill is only the third act to own at least 1 Diamond album following efforts from iconic Pop divas Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey.
