Kanye West may have made headlines last year for urinating in one of his GRAMMYs (click here to read more), but apparently the shocking act didn’t piss off the Recording Academy.
Just four years after setting the record for “most nominations with no wins in a single night” (among males), the rapper-producer extraordinaire now boasts ownership of a historic total of golden gramophones.
During the ceremony’s pre-show (which was untelevised), West won his 22nd GRAMMY – this time in the ‘Best Contemporary Christian Album’ category for his Gospel LP, ‘Jesus is King.’ As expected, he was not on hand to accept it.
The victory means he’s now tied with Jay-Z for most Grammy wins by a credited Hip Hop performer (22 each). By technicality, Jay is still the most-awarded Hip Hop act as he owns two additional golden gramophones for songwriting (‘Black Parade,’ ‘Savage’) – both picked up at the Sunday night show (March 14).
Don’t expect Yeezy to gloat about the triumph any time soon, though. As evidenced by his pissy protest, the chart-topping rapper is among many music superstars who have blasted (or are currently blasting) the award show for its lack of inclusion and lack of transparency about its voting process.
