Saweetie Tackles Homophobia in Hip Hop: ‘We Need to Call Out What We’re Uncomfortable With’

Published: Wednesday 18th Aug 2021 by Rashad

In the wake of heightened attention on homophobia in Hip Hop thanks to the ongoing backlash against Rap star DaBaby (as we’ve extensively covered), more and more stars of the genre are speaking out against the discriminatory practice.

Just two weeks after Megan Thee Stallion made headlines for suggesting its ‘time to address’ the topic head-on (click here to read more), her fellow hitmaking femcee – Saweetie – is echoing the sentiment.

Hop inside to see what she said:

After thrilling spectators at Sprite’s Live from the Label virtual concert series last week, Saweetie spoke to ‘People’ about the importance of equality and LGBTQ+ representation.

“I think that it’s important that we all respect each other. We all bleed the same,” said the ‘My Type’ maestra. “We’re all human beings. I was raised in a household that believes in respecting everyone, no matter who they are, no matter what they do, because at the end of the day, we’re all equal.”

Saweetie suggested it’s everybody’s – not just members of the Hip Hop community’s – job to undo the dangers of homophobia.

“We all need to call out what we’re uncomfortable with,” she later added. “We need to call out what we stand for and what we believe is right.”
