That Grape Juice Exclusive: DJ Ace Unveils This Week’s #SPOTLIGHT3 From #EverythingRNB

Published: Saturday 16th Oct 2021 by Sam

Here at That Grape Juice, we love all things R&B! So, fittingly, we’ve teamed up with DJ Ace – one of the UK’s most revered R&B connoisseurs and host of BBC 1Xtra‘s weekly series Everything RNB (which airs Sundays at 10pm).

Each week he’ll be rounding up his latest show and previewing what’s upcoming on the next episode. Right here on That Grape Juice.

Without further ado, check out the latest installment with DJ Ace below…

Your boy Ace is back again to put you onto the hottest new R&B, that has dropped this past week. I’ll be picking 3 tracks as part of my #SPOTLIGHT3.

Summer Walker – Ex For A Reason (ft. JT from the City Girls)

Summer Walker has captured everyone’s attention recently, with the creative marketing campaign for her second album ‘Still Over It’.  ‘Ex For A Reason’ is the first single off the album, featuring JT from the City Girls. This track will most definitely be the inspiration for a number of Instagram captions over the next few weeks.

**********

Ego Ella May – YoYo

South London singer and songwriter, Ego Ella released her new 4-track E.P this week entitled ‘Fieldnotes’. ‘YoYo’ is the first track taken from the project which she explains in an interview, details her own experiences with being introverted. In 2020 Ego Ella May won ‘Best Jazz Act’ at the MOBO Awards, so she’s definitely one to watch.

********

Amun – Mesmerised

British-Somali singer, Amun is definitely one to watch. The rising star dropped her latest track ‘Mesmerised’ along with the colorful visuals which are reminiscent of an early 2000s rap video.

Amun’s vibe is not that of your typical R&B singer; she leans more towards tracks that wouldn’t be out of place in the club, rather than powerful love ballads.

If you wanna hear some more new dope R&B, catch me on 1Xtra’s R&B show each and every Sunday night from 10pm. This week I’ll be chopping it up with Australian-born, L.A based artist Rini, and I’ll also be reloading my recent interview with Giveon.

Your boy Ace is back with yet another #SPOTLIGHT3, as always, I am here to put you onto the newest R&B drops, for your listening pleasure.

Kelis – Midnight Snacks

Kelis has made her return to music, after stepping away from the limelight to pursue a career as a chef. ‘Midnight Snacks,’ which was produced by The Fanatix, draws on her love of food to cleverly disguise the suggestive lyrics.  Speaking about the track, Kelis said, “I like the fact that you can take sex and food, and you can put these two things together, and they’re totally interchangeable. I love that.”

Robert Glasper – Shine (ft. D Smoke & Tiffany Gouché)

Robert Glasper, who has four GRAMMY Awards under his belt, has enlisted the help of ‘Rhythm & Flow’ season 1 winner D Smoke and rising singer Tiffany Gouché for his newest track, ‘Shine’. The release of his new single follows the announcement of a string of shows in New York City, and live-streamed performances.

************

BenjiFlow – My Bella (ft. Oxlade)

‘My Bella,’ which features Nigerian singer Oxlade, is the latest offering from North London’s very own BenjiFlow. He has revealed he produced the track himself; ‘My Bella’ will feature on his upcoming project entitled ‘The Thrill.’ There are no visuals as of yet, but I can imagine they will follow the same unique route as his previous videos.

Hit me up and let me know what you thought of the tracks I picked for this week’s #SPOTLIGHT3. Make sure you catch me on BBC Radio 1Xtra this Sunday night from 10pm where I’ll be spinning all the hottest R&B from all four corners of the world. I’ll also be joined by the amazing Ari Lennox, and Olivia Nelson will be handling the #RNB1TAKE.

It’s your boy Ace and it’s that time of the week again, where I recommend some amazing brand new R&B tracks, with my #SPOTLIGHT3.

Anthony Hamilton – Real Love (ft. Rick Ross)

Anthony Hamilton has released his first album in nearly two decades, entitled ‘Love Is The New Black.’ The project features the likes of Jennifer Hudson, Lil Jon, and Rick Ross. The project generally gives an Old School feel and his track ‘Real Love’ with Ross is no different. I never thought I’d see the day where these two contrasting artists jump on a track together!

************

Ray BLK – Access Denied

‘Access Denied’ is the title track from Ray BLK’s long-awaited 14-track debut album and it’s one of the stand-outs for me. Ray details the process after a break-up, how she prioritizes her peace and mental health, and how she ensures any negative energies are blocked from gaining access to her.

************

Amaal – Heaven

Somali-Canadian songstress Amaal is making waves across the globe. I chopped it up with her a few months ago on 1Xtra’s R&B Show, about her rising success. ‘Heaven’ is her latest track, and most definitely sounds like heaven. The visuals are minimal enough to allow you to focus on her vocals but creative enough for you to set the scene.

Catch me on BBC Radio 1Xtra, this Sunday night from 10pm for more dope R&B. Canadian girl group BLK will be handling the #RNB1TAKE. If you missed any of last week’s show, you can listen back via the BBC Sounds app.
