5. Out Of Time
Track 7, or as it is better known as ‘Out Of Time,’ is a sleek disco-infused song that recalls the work of Michael Jackson on ‘Off The Wall.’ The song sees the music superstar exploring his own toxicity as he tries to move on and become a better version of himself. The Weeknd almost gets lost in his contemplation, only to be pulled back by Jim Carrey, who promises that “Soon you’ll be healed, forgiven and refreshed.” And indeed, he is.

4. Take My Breath
With the opening guitar riffs recalling that on ‘Edge of Seventeen’ and synths that recall some of ABBA’s best work, The Weeknd successfully fuses two of the late 70’s and early 80’s most successful act’s sounds to create his very own. Hypnotizing and adrenaline-boosting ‘Take My Breath’ is The Weeknd at his dance floor best.

On ‘Here We Go Again’ The Weeknd continues his 80’s tribute by recalling synths similar to that on Asia’s ‘Heat Of The Moment.’ Similarly, he is also spellbound by love and while Tyler, The Creator cautions against falling too fast, it is too late and The Weeknd is head-over-heels and he rides the emotional roller coaster of love, taking the listener along with him. Every hesitation, every moment of bliss is expressed in great intimacy, proving The Weeknd’s pen game is as strong as ever.

With ‘Sacrifice’ The Weeknd has single-handedly revived the late period disco-funk style that had been lost to the ages. While the song may be about blaming his hometown for his ways, he also expresses his self-indulgence across the tune. This kind of excess is what The Weeknd has become known for, a kind of excess that has allowed him to push past his contemporaries and to become one of the reigning pop superstars.

1. Less Than Zero
The final full song on the album is also its best. This sun-soaked ballad is as heartbreaking as The Weeknd has ever been. With lyrics such as “Now you’d rather leave me than to watch me die in your arms,” he pulls on the heartstrings all the while an upbeat synth progression plays the perfect juxtaposition to the lyrics. Make no mistake, this is not a ‘Blinding Lights’ 2.0, rather it is its own entity, one that is destined to become as big as the ones before it.
