Chris Brown may have spent most of his career fielding comparisons to King of Pop Michael Jackson, but this week his name is nabbing headlines opposite another musical monarch: King of Rock N’ Roll Elvis Presley.
As fans of the latter continue flocking to theaters to see the Baz Luhrmann-directed movie about his life (starring Austin Butler), the icon’s once-untouchable Hot 100 record was quietly shattered by Chris – a feat assisted by the placement of songs found aboard the 33-year-old’s latest album, ‘Breezy.’
Released June 24 (the same day as the ‘Elvis’ film), ‘Breezy’ breezed onto this week’s Billboard 200 as the 12th top 10 hit of the GRAMMY winner’s career thanks to high-powered streaming activity of its 24 tracks. Some of those tracks landed on the Hot 100 this week, boosting Brown’s appearance count on the tally to an all-time high among male singers.
Details inside:
Brown was already in history books for being the first male R&B singer to claim 100 Hot 100 hits (as we reported here), but now the stageblazer has blazed a new record in Billboard history books.
Thanks to the arrival of ‘Breezy’ tracks ‘Call Me Everyday’ (#76), ‘Psychic’ (#78), ‘Warm Embrace’ (#79), ‘Addicted’ (#92), ‘Possessive’ (#98) this week, Chris claims 112 entries on the chart – surpassing Presley’s longtime record of 109. It is worth nothing Elvis – the first act in history to have 100 Hot 100 entries – did amass hits before the chart’s inception in 1958.
Regardless, the former now becomes the male singer with the most all-time appearances on the Hot 100 specifically. Look below to see who joins him on this week’s refreshed TGJ Chart Check.
