Just six months after being cleared of copying to create his smash ‘Shape of You,’ Ed Sheeran is back under the legal spotlight. This time relating to ‘Thinking Out Loud.’
Full story below…
A US judge has ordered the Brit-bred chart-topper is set to stand trial over allegations that his hit copied elements of Marvin Gaye classic ‘Let’s Get It On.’
Interestingly, the suit was filed by an asset company that owns part of the copyright of Gaye’s 1973 release (by way of the acquisition of the estate of Ed Townsend – the song’s co-writer).
The plaintiffs are seeking$100 million in damages, alleging in their suit that Sheeran and his co-writer Amy Wadge “copied and exploited, without authorization or credit [Gaye’s track] including but not limited to the melody, rhythms, harmonies, drums, bass line, backing chorus, tempo, syncopation, and looping”.
Word is that the judge ordered the civil trial in light of the inability of music experts – for both the plaintiff’s and defendants – being unable to align on key points.
I don’t think so… hunnie💅🏾 Nice try! Die a happy man by Thomas Rhett is a ripped off. Now that’s da true tea
But Diva knows White men won’t sue each others💅🏾 Unlike Blacks think White owed them s h I t
White demons invented the concept dumbass
Black people used to eat White people’s turd💅🏾
Remove the vocals and it’s the same song.
Hunnie, the vibe is different 💅🏾
Always trying to take undeserved, unearned money from white men 🤦🏽♀️
Exactly my Queen 👑 💯 you educated them well
🤫🫥😜
Your forgot to take your pills for your split personality 💊🤯
The loop sound like similar to “Let’s Get It On” but everything else is different.
Ed Sheeran is NOT a legitimate R&B artist, so of course he’s going to look for Inspiration from someone such as Marvin Gaye.
This doesn’t surprise me.
Diva—you’re trying way too hard. SMDH.
Nah, not this time
He’s done it with perfect as well it’s legit the same as r Kelly’s “if I could turn back the hands of time”
Yes, there are similarities in Ed Sheehan and Marvin Gaye music. You better reach a pleas bargain before it goes to trial. Both songs are beautifully made. Love them both.
The only reason why any of you even like the song is because it is familiar to you. You’ ve heard it before. You like the way it makes you FEEL. White artists don’t know how to emote and blend in harmonies that stir your SOUL. The bass players cant play like black bassists and the drummers definitely cant keep a groove like black artists. They have no soul. Speaking of soul, this is a SOUL record not an r&b song not a pop song. Ed Sheeran knew exactly what he was doing. Take the most of it and then make some parts “white”. White artists do it all the time. Ed Sheeran’s background singers are gospel singing “black singers”. Have you ever seen a black artist with all white background singers? NEVER. Everybody is inspired by Marvin Gaye. Young, old, black, white….All he had to do was give credit, then there wouldn’t be a lawsuit. Didn’t he watch the whole “Blurred Lines” debacle?
