Chart Check [Hot 100]: Chris Brown’s ‘Under the Influence’ Becomes His Highest-Charting Solo Hit Since 2016

Published: Wednesday 9th Nov 2022 by Rashad

Chris Brown‘s sleeper hit, ‘Under the Influence,’ continues to awaken renewed interest from the masses thanks to an impressive response at R&B radio and social media.

Originally found aboard his 2019 chart-topping album, ‘Indigo,’ ‘Influence’ didn’t truly begin gaining steam until users at TikTok took it to viral status – a feat that led it to top real-time sales tallies around the world.

Stateside, the song helped Chris make history by making him the first R&B singer to nap over 50 top 40 hits.  And, if peruse of the updated Billboard Hot 100 is anything to judge by, the tune’s victory lap is far from over.

To capitalize on the success of ‘Under,’ Brown released its official music video on October 20.  The move only delivered even more momentum behind the song’s presence at streaming and digital download platforms, boosting it to #21 on this week’s Hot 100 as a result.

Here are the numbers that powered the placement.

  • Streaming ≈ 15.7 million U.S.-based streams
  • Digital Downloads ≈ 3,100 sold
  • Radio airplay ≈ 10.5 million audience impressions

While Chris was spotted in the hitlist’s top 10 as recently as last year with the Young Thug-assisted megahit, ‘Go Crazy,’ the gained traction for ‘Influence’ pushed it to the highest solo height the GRAMMY winner’s known since 2015’s ‘Back to Sleep’ catapulted to #20 in 2016 thanks to multiple star-studded remixes featuring the likes of Usher, Zayn, August Alsina, Trey Songz, and Miguel.

Despite the assist from the remixes at the time, his solo ‘Sleep’ version still maintained the lead as the better-selling version of the tune, thusly keeping him as the only act credited on Billboard.

Should ‘Under’ at least reach #19 on its Hot 100 journey, it will become his highest-charting solo hit since 2012’s ‘Don’t Wake Me Up.’  Until that day comes, look below to see who joins Breezy in the top 25 on this week’s TGJ Chart Check: Hot 100 edition.
