RIAA: ‘That’s The Way Love Goes’ Becomes Janet Jackson’s First-Ever MultiPlatinum Single Nearly 30 Years After Release

Published: Wednesday 16th Nov 2022 by Rashad

With over 100 million records sold worldwide, Pop Empress Janet Jackson reigns as one of the best-selling female artists in history on the global front – a ranking she seems poised to extend as the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) recently updated the certification statuses of a slew of her classic hits.

Details inside.

Monday (November 14), the RIAA took to press to reveal several of the diva’s most memorable singles had new certifications attached to them. Leading the bunch was her 1993 Hot 100 chart-topping hit ‘That’s the Way Love Goes.’

The inaugural single from her chart-topping, eponymous album released the same year, the song – with its 8-week reign atop the Pop chart – marked a personal milestone for Jackson as it became her longest-running #1 hit to date.  In fact, no member of the legendary Jackson family (including King of Pop Michael Jackson) can boast holding the top spot of the Hot 100 for as long.

As such, it’s only fitting the tune – now at 2x Platinum – would become the first multi-Platinum hit of her career (in America). The measure denotes sales of 2 million in the United States.

Look below to see the full updated list.

2x Platinum

  • ‘That’s the Way Love Goes’ (Single)

1x Platinum

  • ‘When I Think of You’ (Single)
  • ‘Rhythm Nation’ (Single)
  • ‘Anytime, Any Place’ (Single)
  • ‘I Get Lonely’ (Single)
  • ‘Escapade’ (Single)
  • ‘All For You’ (Single)
  • ‘If’ (Single)
  • ‘Feedback’ (Single)
  • ‘Nasty’ (Single)
  • ‘Together Again’ (Single)

And though ‘That’s the Way Love Goes’ now has the distinctive honor of being her sole multi-Platinum single, her legendary albums are no strangers to such certification.

As of time reported, 1989’s ‘Rhythm Nation 1814’ and 1993’s ‘Janet‘ are her highest-certified bodies of work, both sitting at 6x Platinum. Her breakthrough album, 1986’s ‘Control,’ sits at 5x Platinum while 1997’s ‘The Velvet Rope’ swings in at 3x Platinum and 2001’s ‘All For You’ LP is 2x Platinum.
