‘Look what you made me do’ takes on a new meaning for Taylor Swift fans, affectionately called #Swifties, in the wake of ongoing calls for better regulation of event ticket handling at Ticketmaster – the world’s largest ticket sales and distribution company.
As reported, the fan group was bested by ‘unprecedented bots’ on the Ticketmaster site after Swift announced her latest stadium trek, ‘The Eras Tour,’ which caused system crashes, halted ticket sales, and jacked prices of resold tickets into the high thousands.
Despite multiple apologies from the company, it was not only scolded by Taylor but also became the subject of a federal government probe launched to investigate accusations of fraud, price fixing/gouging, and antitrust violations.
Some impatient Swifties aren’t willing to wait for the potential of retribution in a criminal court, however, as evidenced by a recently lifted civil case.
Details inside.
TMZ says two dozen Taylor fans are taking to the courts seeking restitution for Ticketmaster “allowing bots and scalpers to royally screw up the November 15 presale event.”
Their suit comes after millions of would-be concertgoers queued in a digital line for hours hoping to score at least one seat to her 52-date tour next year, but those hopes were dashed due to technical issues and reports of “insufficient remaining ticket inventory.”
Documents filed in Los Angeles County recently allege some #Swifties never received a Verified Fan code or were sent “malfunctioning codes” that intentionally made them ineligible to participate in the presale.
Beyond accusations of ‘intentional deception,’ the suit accuses Ticketmaster of achieving ‘ill-gotten gains’ and being ‘eager to allow’ scalpers access to the presale so it could collect additional fees for every ticket sold and resold.
#Swifties are asking the court to fine the company $2500 per violation.
At writing, Ticketmaster has not made a public statement about the lawsuit.
