Including streaming and digital downloads in certification calculations at the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has not only helped a number of modern hits race to historic certification thresholds in record time but it’s also given many of yesteryear’s favorites some much-deserved shine.
The latest to testify to the aforementioned is 90’s R&B girl group Xscape.
Two of Xscape’s biggest hits – 1993’s ‘Understanding‘ and 1995’s ‘Who Can I Run To’ – may have raced to “Gold” status at the RIAA at the height of their respective popularities, but their success narratives stalled for years until the ladies reunited in 2017.
Note: Gold denotes sales of 500,000 units in the United States.
Since then their classic catalog has received an uptick in attention in the digital age thanks to spotlighting garnered from press, touring, reality shows, and a #VERZUZ against SWV.
The culmination of that sales and streaming increase was reported by the RIAA on Friday (March 10), giving ‘Understanding,’ ‘Run,’ and their 1993 debut single, ‘Just Kickin It,’ just the boost needed to reach new certification rungs.

Thanks to the recent certification upgrades, ‘Kickin’ – the only song of Xscape’s to go Platinum during their prime – becomes the group’s first multi-Platinum hit.
It’s certainly expected their other fan favorites (i.e. ‘My Little Secret,’ ‘Do You Want To,’ etc.) will soon follow suit.
