3 years after Summer Walker co-signed a fan tweet that crowned her this generation’s “Queen of R&B,” ‘The Breakfast Club’ hosts DJ Envy and Charlamagne tha God reignited the conversation about who is most deserving of the throne.
Turning to SZA as their joint pick, the radio hosts even suggested the songstress – despite having one of the best-selling R&B albums of recent memory with 2022’s ‘SOS‘ – isn’t given enough flowers.
“Do we appreciate SZA as an artist the way we should?” Charlamagne asked before referring to the ‘Snooze‘ songstress as a “once-in-a-generation talent.”
Though Envy argued her music appreciated, he still feels her total artistry deserves even more attention.
“[She] is this generation’s Mary J. Blige,” Envy relayed to which Charlamagne agreed before likening the TDE artist’s star power to that of Beyoncé and Rihanna.
Inciting a Twitter debate as a result, among those who gave their opinion an unceremonious thumbs down is former co-host Jess Hilarious.
“These n**gas trash. Envy, shut up! I know artists [get] pissed [off] when old heads do this [because] now everybody [is negatively] comparing SZA to MJB, and it ain’t even her fault! She has her own identity,” she said on her Instagram Story on Tuesday (January 23).
Later, the duo responded to the uproar that ignited because of their commentary and reminded listeners that every generation as “its greats.”
“My kids look at SZA the way I looked at Mary J. Blige [back in the day],” Envy shared.
