Cupcakke Opens Up About Colorism and Being Blackballed by the Music Industry

Cupcakke is opening up like never before.

More details below…

The rapper hosted a Q&A with fans on Twitter. One fan asked her: “Do you think your career is being blackballed by labels and colorism?”

This led the rapper to respond:

“I’ve sat down with almost every label there is, offering me 500k is just not wise for me take. When I can make that in one tour. So yes maybe I am facing the repercussions. Not one blog posted the album besides pop-crave , not one playlist for the album, no media , absolutely nothing but the album still pulled in 10Million in a month, so I’m blessed regular-less,” Cupcakke said.

“Do darkness also play a role? Of course. Dauntless is the best female rap album put out this year. And n****as know that , that’s why they didn’t even put a rate on it. But luckily I do it for the sport,” she concluded.

Her ‘Dauntless Manifesto’ album was released at the end of June and served as her first album in 6 years.

It’s business. Record labels are capable of mass marketing that’s hard to duplicate without their resources. Colorism may be an issue, but the bigger issue is that record labels have business visions that aren’t aligned with the personal visions of the aspiring artist. There’s a huge disconnect.
