In a statement issued to PEOPLE, the legendary singer revealed that her mom Patricia Carey, and sister Alison Carey have sadly died. She said:
‘My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.
I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed.’I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”
Patricia, an opera singer, duetted with Mariah 2010’s holiday effort ‘O Come, All Ye Faithfull.’
The estrangement between Mimi and Alison is well documented and was addressed in the songbird’s memoir, ‘The Meaning of Mariah Carey.’ Nonetheless, the star has always maintained her love for Alison and her family at large.
