Billboard 200: Katy Perry’s ‘143’ Album Debuts in Top 10 as First-Week Sales Are Revealed

Published: Sunday 29th Sep 2024 by Sam

Katy Perry strut back onto the scene with her seventh studio album, ‘143.’

Named after the numerical translation for ‘love,’ the upbeat set saw the Pop star dart onto the dancefloor with unapologetic gusto.

Purposefully upbeat, the project was previewed by way of singles such as ‘Woman’s World,’ ‘Lifetimes,’ and ‘I’m His, He’s Mine’ with Deochii.

The journey to the LP’s release hasn’t been without its speedbumps, however.

Indeed, sans ‘Woman’s World,’ none of the follow-up offerings have managed to chart on the Billboard Hot 100.

There has also been the omnipresent discourse surrounding Dr. Luke‘s contribution to the record given the headlines and legal drama that have plagued the producer in recent years. And, even though the hitmaker was never found liable for anything he stood accused of, the sour public sentiment appears to have spilled into corners of Perry’s campaign if online chatter is anything to go by.

Still, with the final numbers tallied, there’s been some reprieve.

Full story below…

Per Billboard, ‘143’ has premiered in the top 10 of the coveted count.

Check out the official placement and sales:

Billboard 200 Position: #6

First-Week Sales: 48,000

Not quite the colossal comeback perhaps hoped for commercially (and a dip from the 50,000 opening from 2020’s ‘Smile’), but a top 10 is a top 10.

What’s more with Ms.  Perry setting sail on the ‘Lifetimes Tour,’ it appears the era has more mileage.

Not bad for low streaming numbers and non charting singles. Not bad for a good album. Not bad for the hate train she’s been getting from mainstream media and people. time, she need to stay away from Dr. Luke and focus on her fun self music
    Congrats Katy 😍✅

These are atrocious numbers. Several flop singles with a huge budget. This is a FLOP of epic proportions. No excuses.

They are. It’s all relative, though. In this day and age, it’s not uncommon for an album to chart so high with such low sales if everything else on the list isn’t doing much better. I’ve seen albums debut in the top 5 before with similar numbers. That’s simply a consequence of this generation preferring to stream music rather than buy it. I prefer purchasing an album over streaming, but that’s just me.

The reason these numbers are nothing to write home about it because there was a huge budget behind 143, so it should’ve performed better. To spend all that money on this album for it to sell only 37,500 pure sales and 48,000 sales overall is beyond underwhelming. It may have debuted in the top 10, but when everything else on the list isn’t doing massive numbers either, that’s hardly something to be proud of.

    FLOP

Tbh I was expecting lower numbers, guess this is ok in today’s non-selling climate.

She did better than expected. She #2 in Album Chart and #6 in Billboard 200. We thought she’s getting g less than 40k. Not bad for an album without high charting singles.
