Exclusive: Morgan Marvels with ‘Bum Bum’ on That Grape Juice Live

Published: Sunday 22nd Sep 2024 by Sam

Morgan has been magnetizing buzz on a major scale with her latest single ‘Bum Bum.’

The rising star – who recently signed with Red Bull Records – boasts a unique flavor that draws on her soulful roots, potent Pop palette, and the infectious sounds of Dancehall.

Anchored by a sample of Sister Nancy’s classic ‘Bam Bam,’ Morgan’s infectious offering is set to reside on her forthcoming EP ‘Emotional Gangster’ (which arrives on October 25).

Ahead of the project’s landing, Morgan took center stage on That Grape Juice Live to perform the ‘Bum Bum.’

Watch the blazing above and learn more about the name on the mouths of many below…

That Grape Juice: Morgan, welcome to That Grape Juice! For those who don’t know, can you tell us a little bit about how you got into music?

Morgan: Thank you for having me! I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember (probably officially from seven years old). My dad has always produced music and we had a home studio at home – he also used to work on sound systems when he was younger. Music runs in the family – Mr Vegas and Ken Boothe are actually my cousins. My life really changed though when Rudimental invited me to become one of their vocalists on tour when I was eighteen – it was my official entry into the music industry.

Your sound is clearly influenced by a plethora of genres, with Pop and R&B sprinkled amongst Dance records, tell us a bit about some of the artists that have inspired you and your sound to date?

I don’t really consider pop a genre – to me it’s a category and whatever is popular at the time. I’m inspired by so much music though. I am half-Jamaican and half-British – and I’m proud of my dual heritage and naturally you’re going to hear different influences in my music. I’m not afraid of being versatile – to me versatility is a testament to your craft. Rihanna is the perfect example of this – she can do any genre of music but it will always sound and be Rihanna.

Can you tell us a bit about your comeback release, ‘Bum Bum’? What made you sample Sister Nancy’s classic ‘Bam Bam’? Was paying homage to your Jamaican roots something you have always wanted to do?

I grew up listening to Reggae and Dancehall – my Dad always had it blasting through the house. I don’t think any household is unfamiliar with Sister Nancy’s ‘Bam Bam’ – it’s iconic and timeless. You’ll always hear a Jamaican stamp on most of my music but I guess you could say this one is a proper homage to my roots. I feel privileged that I was giving their blessing to release my version of this track.

You’ve had so much success already as a solo artist, but we understand you love to write songs for other artists also, can you tell us a bit about your songwriting process and some of the other artists you’ve been working with over the years?

I love writing for other people. I’m always creating and writing but sometimes stepping out of your own head and ideas does wonders for your craft as a songwriter. It challenges me and allows me to step into the mind/world of someone else and think outside of the box. It makes me a better creative. I’ve written a lot of dance records with and for Rudimental, Sigma, Purple Disco Machine to name a few. My real love though is writing for Kpop artists – there are no boundaries sonically and melodically in that world. I travel there a couple times a year and have releases with Jaeyhun, Kep1er and some other amazing emerging talent there. One day you’ll see me writing for BTS and Blackpink though!

We were blown away by your rendition of ‘Bum Bum’ for That Grape Juice, is performing your music live something you’ve always loved doing?

The stage is my home and safe space. There is nothing I love more than performing live. It’s a perfect opportunity to share a room and really connect with my supporters (I call them my military). I want the rooms I play in to be a safe space and party for everyone.

You recently announced your UK headline tour’s taking place this November—how are you feeling? What can fans expect?

I am SO gassed to be back on stage! This is my first headline tour so expect a massive party and make sure you come through.

Lastly, what’s next for Morgan? Are there more releases on the horizon?

I know it seems like I haven’t dropped my own music for a while but I am officially back. There will be no breaks and I will keep delivering the best possible music for you all.
