“No Stage for Abusers”: Petition to Block Chris Brown from Performing in South Africa Surges to 30,000 Signatures

Women’s rights activists have seen their petition to keep ‘Run It‘ singer Chris Brown away from performing in South Africa run up to over 30,000 signatures in less than 2 weeks.

In a bid to get the attention of Leon Schreiber, Minister of Home Affairs in South Africa, a women’s rights advocacy group called Women for Change launched a #MuteChrisBrown campaign on October 2 bolstered by a petition to ban him from taking the stage in the country at the end of the year due to his alleged history of domestic violence.

As has been widely reported, the GRAMMY winner is due to take his high-octane live showings to Johannesburg’s FNB Stadium on December 14.  A 94,000-seat venue, push for FNB tickets was so high Brown had to add a second date (December 15) – both of which sold out in mere hours.

Despite the fan demand, Women for Change are begging organizers to “reconsider” having the R&B bad boy grace the venue’s stage.

“His concert is scheduled just days after the global commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, making this event a direct insult to the millions of women and girls affected by violence in South Africa and worldwide,” the petition reads.

Their sentiment is one echoed by the advocacy group’s executive director.

“The petition was started to send a strong message that we will not tolerate the celebration of individuals with a history of violence against women,”said Women for Change executive director Sabina Walter after expressing “shock and disappointment” over the R&B superstar’s future visit. “When someone like Chris Brown is given a platform in a country where GBV is at crisis levels, it sends a damaging message — that fame and power outweigh accountability.”

At the time of this report the signature count sits at 32,229. Brown has not issued a direct statement over the backlash yet.

Africans are desperate because no one comes there to perform. Tamia sold out a stadium too. Chris Beatemdown Brown is The Weeknd’s lessor.

What stadium and when? She sold out four arena shows last year in South Africa and that’s 31,000 seats COMBINED that you’re trying to compare to a stadium that seats more than 94,000.
