Normani had no clue that the music video to her 2019 Platinum-selling debut single ‘Motivation‘ was giving one of its viewers just the motivation needed to slip a ring on her finger one day.
After sending the Web into a frenzy with news of her engagement to NFL star DK Metcalf earlier this week, the lovebirds flew over to ‘Vogue’ to detail their heartwarming love story.
“I knew absolutely nothing,” said Normani about Metcalf popping the question earlier this month. “As oblivious as oblivious can get, that was pretty much me.”
Later detailing how DK tricked her into thinking they were attending a surprise birthday dinner for his sister, the gathering turned out to be a surprise proposal setup for the former Fifth Harmony hitmaker.
“Honestly, I was so overwhelmed, I can’t even remember what was said. I just said ‘Yes, yes, yes, of course.’ The ring was beautiful. My baby did amazing. It was so beautiful and special, and he went above and beyond,” she said about the custom piece from jeweler Jason of Beverly Hills.
And though proposal seemed sudden for Normani, Metcalf revealed he’d been planning on nabbing the songstress for years.
“About two years prior to us even meeting, they were playing music videos in the locker room and ‘Motivation’ ended up popping up on the screen. I was like, ‘The moment that I saw you come up on that screen, I said, ‘That’s going to be my wife. That’s going to be my girlfriend one day.’’ I was in a relationship at the time, and then the chips just fell the way that they did,” he shared before explaining how R&B diva Ciara eventually hooked them up.
Normani chimes in to say she’s not begun wedding dress shopping just yet, but she’s already mulling over ideas.
“But for me, the most important part is that God has just been there. He’s been faithful to both of us, and I have found my dream man,” she relayed. “I’m grateful that I get to do [wedding planning] alongside my mom. We’ve been through a lot as a family between my mom and my dad’s health issues: my mom was diagnosed two times with breast cancer, and she’s still here to see this day, and my dad has prostate cancer. I don’t take for granted that they’re both here to witness this monumental moment in my life—I’m really, really blessed.”
