SZA on Breaking Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ Record for Longest Top 10 Run in Billboard 200 History: “I’m Grateful to Be in the Same Space”

SZA‘s domination of Billboard since the 2022 release of her long-awaited sophomore album ‘SOS‘ has been nothing short of astounding.

On the Hot 100 side of the tracks, the project soared into history books for rocketing five singles into the top 10 – a feat only two other Black women could boast: Whitney Houston and Janet Jackson.

Speaking of Jacksons, the Pop royal’s older brother Michael may hold the record for the best-selling album of all time thanks to his 1982 LP ‘Thriller,’ but this week saw SZA (born Solana Rowe) even blast past a longstanding tenancy record of his on the Billboard 200.

SZA’s ‘SOS’ was found at #4 on this week’s Billboard 200, enjoying its 118th week of charting overall.

Among those 118 frames, 80 weeks were in the top 10 – a feat no other Black artist has ever accomplished.  Before her, ‘Thriller’ stayed in the tally’s topmost dectet for a whopping 79 weeks. It should be noted the project’s tenure includes the stay of its original version and deluxe edition ‘LANA.’

Taking to Friday’s episode of ‘The Jennifer Hudson Show‘ (March 21), SZA beamed when quizzed about the historic achievement.

“Don’t say that out loud,” Solana said jokingly to Jennifer (as seen in the video above). “It sounds so illegal.”

Later in the chat, SZA expressed her gratitude for the milestone.

“It’s the craziest piece of information, which is why I have to separate myself from the milestone and get into what is the experience,” Rowe relayed before sharing, “…when you think about the wide range and the genius of Michael Jackson, it’s like I’m grateful toe ven be in the same space as an accolade of his. But, I have so much further to go.”
