John Legend is waxing candid about his former friend Kanye West.
The pair’s rise to prominence was intertwined.
Indeed, they worked together in earnest at the start of their respective journeys, with Legend signing to West’s G.O.O.D Music and the MC creatively shaping his debut album. 2004’s ‘Get Lifted.’
Their paths would diverge – creatively, contractually, and even politically. And yet, a mutual respect and camaraderie remained consistent.
Until recently.
As reported, in one of his now-trademark rants, West blasted Legend as a “sissy” who “smells like mashed potatoes.”
Now, the ‘All of Me’ singer is addressing Ye’s unravelling.

In an interview with The Times, Legend said of an early West:
“He had so much optimism, so much creativity. It does feel sad, sometimes shocking, to see where he is now.”
He added:
“I didn’t see [then] a hint of what we’re seeing now, his obsessions with antisemitism, anti-blackness, and it is sad to see his devolution.”
As for the rationalizing West’s problematic antics, the 46-year-old pointed to the passing of the rapper’s mom, Donda West. He shared:
“I don’t think we’re qualified to psychoanalyse him, but after his mother passed in 2007 there was definitely a difference. His descent started then and seems to have accelerated recently.”

Legend may have a non blk wife but has he said negative things about the blk community like Kanye? I’d rather the guy that’s not actually speaking negatively on my community regardless of whom he married.
