Reflecting on the response to her emotional social media video, Nelson admitted she was overwhelmed by the support.
She said:
“I wanted it to get as much reach as possible to raise awareness about it, and I actually can’t believe how amazing the response has been… It’s a lot, but it’s what I wanted it to do.”
The star explained that SMA can be detected at birth through a heel prick test, something not currently standard practice on the NHS.
Adding that premature birth masked many of the early warning signs, the Little Mix
“If I had seen someone else’s video, maybe, just maybe, I could have prevented this from happening,”
Nelson revealed that both twins have since received a one-off gene therapy infusion designed to halt further muscle deterioration, though some damage cannot be reversed.
Remaining hopeful despite the challenges ahead, the 34-year-old added:
“We’ve been told they will probably never walk… but they are still smiling, they are still happy and they have each other.”
“I just want to be their mum, I don’t want to be a nurse… If this is caught from birth it’s just life changing.”
Moving forward, the performer says her focus now is raising awareness and pushing for change so other families don’t face the same heartbreak.
