Mariah Carey is set to add an unexpected twist to the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics opening ceremony by singing in Italian.

She’ll be joined by Andrea Bocelli, who will deliver multilingual arias alongside Chris Stapleton and Karol G, as organizers aim for a sweeping “global village” spectacle.

Yet, behind the glamor, political friction threatens to dim the shine.

Reports that U.S. ICE agents will be present in Italy to protect Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have sparked backlash from Milan officials and opposition politicians. Meanwhile, Russia’s athletes will compete without a flag or an anthem.

Ceremony architect Marco Balich tells Variety that:

“It’s very important that we use this platform to send a message that to stand for peace is crucial.”

The 2026 Winter Olympics kick off on February 6 until February 22.
