Hours before she is released from prison, Lauryn Hill unlocks a brand new number today, named….‘Consumerism‘.
Penned before she was incarcerated but mixed during her time away, the song will appear on her forthcoming studio effort, ‘Letters From Exile’, reportedly set for a 2014 release date.
Meet the brand new song and its accompanying message after the jump!
“‘Consumerism’ is part of some material I was trying to finish before I had to come in. We did our best to eek out a mix via verbal and emailed direction, thanks to the crew of surrogate ears on the other side. Letters From Exile is material written from a certain space, in a certain place.
I felt the need to discuss the underlying socio-political, cultural paradigm as I saw it. I haven’t been able to watch the news too much recently, so I’m not hip on everything going on. But inspiration of this sort is a kind of news in and of itself, and often times contains an urgency that precedes what happens. I couldn’t imagine it not being relevant. Messages like these I imagine find their audience, or their audience finds them, like water seeking it’s level.”
Her flow is pretty crazy, I’ll give her that – but how about we tone it back, Lauryn. Make songs with messages and meanings that people can relate to. I’m all for expressing yourself, but I mean come on, sometimes less is more.
Twitter: jmurdoc2 for a follow-back!
I kinda know what you mean, i think that she needs commercialism to spread her message as well as keep financially stable.
Thank you Dev. I am glad someone understood what I meant rather than try to downplay anyone’s intelligence. It’s amazing what people think they can infer based on reading a couple sentences! I didn’t realize we were on a blog with some Harvard graduates who think they can make people feel stupid!
Why don’t you learn what she’s speaking about. It’s called Higher Education.
Thank you! I don’t underrstand why people don’t step their knowledge up.
You give these basic people something a bit beyond their comprehension and they beg for you to lower the bad.

@Kristina and @Your Life – I did not criticize the words she said, nor did I say anything about not understanding them. I simply said it is not relatable to the general masses. I was just commenting on how I thought she always pushes it a little too hard…It was an opinion on her music, and I am a fan. But I am glad you feel so elitist to try to tear people down online…by the way I have a bachelor’s degree and I am in law school right now. I believe that is called “Higher Education”. Damn some people are pressed this morning!
Relate to? This is about how the higher ups are stealing from us, enslaving us and trying to manipulate us. This is relatable.
Yesssss……..I know people are going to be like WTF is she saying….what is she talking about…….this is straight Brilliance at it’s best…Lauryn is not for the small minded. She straight killed this!
THE EMPRESS OF R&B/HIP-HOP SOUL!!!
I LOVE THIS QUEEN RIGHT HERE.
Who is this m*****?
M*****???
It takes one to know one. Are you the green, white or yellow m*****?
Wow @ Lauryn’s talent. Her usage of words in rhyme is bananas. I just hope she’s not too complex for her own good. You have to feed things to the public in doses and say only a few complicated things at a time. That makes it standout more with out losing emphasis. If she would only simplify her message sometimes, it wouldn’t come across like she’s reading a dictionary. It’s unfortunate because what’s she trying to get across to everyone is worth listening to.
You mean dumb herself down? That’s ironic seeing as though her messages against that same thing. People need to think on a higher level and stop asking to be spoon fed intellectual messages that have depth to them. It could be that she wants people to use their brains and come up to her level instead of her coming down. Judging from a lot of the comments it’s apparent that The trash being played on the radio has really dumbed everyone down to the point where they don’t want to hear anything deep.
Exactly. I know what you meant – and I know you don’t mean she needs to dumb herself down. She just needs to be clever with it rather than be so blunt, and I agree it does come off as a dictionary reading of sorts. Still hot, but if she is serious about a comeback when she is out of jail this is not the way to go.
She is a musical genius.. Who never reached her full potential…
@ MR. M
“Who is this m*****?”
If you think education is expensive try ignorance. You are pathetic to call Lauryn Hill a donkey. You seriously have deep rooted issues.

Y’all start these stan wars that aren’t warranted. Lauryn is damn near 40 yrs old – she dont give a f*** about being called the QUEEN ,etc

Hip Hop royalty lyrics..
Doesn’t she run out of breath!!
Those singing lungs come in handy when she does her rapping jeeeeez
Wishing her well, but Lauryn’s got BILLS. She needs to get her commercial on.
But she doesnt NEED money she’s worth millions & the Marleys have millions more – the issue is she wasn’t paying taxes bc she doesn’t believe in the US system (which I don’t agree with if you’re going to live her) but she’s very cerebral almost like a genius to the point where it makes her CRAZY
No thanks. -plays The Miseducation and Unplugged-
No ma’am Ms. Lauryn Hill-ism.
This song is too Angryism.
Give us something we can rock to please..?
E P I C!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You can tell that she really doesn’t want to be in this biz, nor world. I get it, she’s forced to sell herself again, but she’s not bowing. I will blast this in my car cause I get it, but these queens won’t. I like it, but I can see if people want the old her back in a new way. But the thing is, this always been L Boggie.
I agree with the sentiment that she needs to bring it back a notch for the album. Her music and flow truly is awesome, but it’s not something that you would listen to over and over IMO. She actually got a lot of wisdom across on the Miseducation album, but it was also relatable. I actually love her singing and I just want to hear her hold some notes and get her harmony on again. If she can’t send it to radio (or they won’t play it) then it defeats the mission!
her rap sounds like it’s a damn punk rock song tbh.

Humanities graduates do incredibly well professionally and it is time academia acknowledged this, argues Matthew Batstone According to a present piece of research from New College of the Humanities, 60% of the UK’s leaders have humanities, arts or social science degrees. The STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, maths) account for only 15 percent of the sample. This might come as a bit of a surprise for some.Somebody studying the politics or sociology of Britain might reasonably infer from government policy that only people with STEM degrees make a contribution to the prosperity of the nation. However the literature from academics within support of the humanities tends to reinforce which supposition. Supports tend to argue in which the humanities are vital for society since successful societies need to know their past, the history of ideas & their culture. This is true, other than it misses a key argument underpinning the value of the humanities, the fact in which graduates of these disciplines do incredibly well professionally, involving those who follow business careers. What’s more, that is a vital part of the argument within favour of continued support of these subjects. The full Select Humanities report could be found here, other than the data is pretty clear. The study reviewed leaders across a wide range of category in the UK, including FTSE 100 CEOs, vice chancellors of Russell Group universities, MPs, Magic Circle law firms, managers of creative businesses and many more. Dividing subject areas among STEM, humanities, vocational, arts, and social sciences leaders along with degrees from the core humanities were the largest group. Even among FTSE 100 companies there are 34 CEOs along with a humanities degree against 31 with a STEM degree. If so several of the UK’s leaders have humanities degrees, is it likely to determine whether what they have studied contributes to their achievement?A good beginning point is the business lobbying organisation, CBI. The CBI says in which what big business requires are graduates who can work in teams, who can problem solve & who are numerate. This might be the primary of the government’s preoccupation with STEM subjects and it is certainly true in which any client would be concerned if their auditor could not add up.Therefore, these are the primary skills graduates must have. They can only take professionals so far up the ladder. They are not the capabilities in which will generate ideas or form wealth and employment. Steve Jobs’ obsession was along with calligraphy, not cash flow statements. The capabilities in which the CBI talks about are the plumbing (without being dismissive you wouldn’t needs to live in a house without plumbing). The humanities gives a rich training in the skills underpinning leadership and innovation, regardless of whether in which leader runs a government department, a school, a newspaper or a corporation.
