The-Dream Dishes On Working With Ciara / Says R&B Lacks A Powerhouse Voice

Published: Tuesday 19th Nov 2013 by Sam

Beyond the bevy of global hits he’s written, The-Dream is renowned for serving up many a controversial quote.

However, the star’s candor is equally refreshing when simply sharing his thoughts on the industry he’s come to dominate.

During a recent interview with our friends over at Vlad TV, the singer-songwriter waxed honest on working with Ciara (the pair last teamed up on 2010’s ill-fated ‘Basic Instinct’), as well as his thoughts on the lack of powerhouse vocalists in R&B and more.

Peep the interesting watch after the jump…

A great watch.

Granted folk are quick to critique Dream and CiCi’s chemistry on ‘Instinct’ (or lack-thereof), it did yield R&B smash ‘Ride’, while their partnership more broadly has delivered solid cuts such as ‘Like A Surgeon’ and ‘High Price’. Hence, we wouldn’t be averse to seeing Ms. Harris hit the studio again with Terius. Come to think of it, a new Ciara album helmed by Dream, Darkchild, and Polow Da Don, sounds like a winner — doesn’t it?

Tidbit: The-Dream’s latest album ‘IV Play’ has sold 42,000 copies since release in May.

  3. #Beyindependent November 19, 2013

Beyonce is the only vocal powerhouse in rnb the rest can’t even deliver live like Tamar Keyshia Cole and Kelly rowland.

    • audreyherbsburn November 19, 2013

clearly, he didn’t say that. he blatantly stated that there are a lot of female powerhouse vocalists. he clearly said jennifer hudson first.

  4. Rosie November 19, 2013

LMAO. No lies detected. Her stans always want to call her a vocalist with those whispering ass vocals, they’re clearly delusional.

  5. Rach November 19, 2013

You putting those two topics together in the title = shade

  6. Tallb November 19, 2013

  9. The Boy Toy November 19, 2013

Luke James is a powerhouse, but his music is boring and he doesn’t catch women’s attention.

    • realtalk November 19, 2013

Yes Luke is a male powerhouse singer. I would truly love to see him collaborate with Beyoncé JHud and Brandy. I think something good and great could come from these collaboration. Luke James should really consider collaborating with the afford mentions.

  10. realtalk November 19, 2013

Female powerhouse both album/live and in tone would be Beyoncé Brandy JHud Legeci Fantasa just to name a few that sounds good on album as well as singing live.

    • Jasmine G. November 21, 2013

JHud Legeci Fantasia, I agree with these. Beyonce I owuld not say is a powerhouse vocalist, she just knows how to use her voice really well. Everyone is only saying Beyonce because of her popularity. Beyonce is a performer, not a true artist. Brandy is the same, she has a great voice but isn’t a powerhouse vocalist, to me.

  11. The Boy Toy November 19, 2013

Tank is a great singer but Miguel is no powerhouse…no taking away from his talent because he can sing, write & produce but a powerhouse he is not.

  12. Rihanna needs subtitles (Csquad) November 19, 2013

  22. Navy Nick November 19, 2013

He is a songwriter, who has the biggest hits under his belt. HIS ALBUM IS ACTUALL really good, he just had TERRIBLE PROMO, and BLACK FOLK DONT SUPPORT ANYWAYS… Ciara’s new album is really good, IDK what’s going on with fans. she lost hers, GAGA lost hers., it is weird! I am still here fro Ciara, and GAGA, they BOTH SLAY A STAGE LIVE !!

  23. Biting Truth November 19, 2013

He look like a chicken Mcnugget! French frie arms, and legs and a Mr Potatoe Head! # That’s all i got

  25. Grande The Way November 19, 2013

There are male vocalist in R&B like Tank, Miguel, Luke James, and Jermaine Paul. Problem is that they get outshined by less talented clones like Chris Brown, Trey Songz, Neyo, and this new August Alsina guy.

  26. The Boy Toy November 19, 2013

None of them are less talented, they’re just more appealing to females (the majority of male R&B supporters).

    • The Boy Toy November 19, 2013

      @Grande the way

  27. Sisqo is a Legend November 19, 2013

THE DREAM AND CI-ERROR CAN’T SING. AND CI-ERROR DOESN’T NEED ANOTHER FLOPPY DISK.

  28. MATT November 19, 2013

The Dream isn’t a powerful vocalist either…. The irony!

It’s a shame when people compare Ciara’s decompressed vocals to the Angelic, Elegant and Unique Aaliyah’s voice.

Ciara is the Britney Spears in R&B when it comes to vocals.

  34. QUEEN BEY November 19, 2013

TGJ obviously changed the reply settings…smh

  35. FutureCIARA November 19, 2013

So what does that say about your favs vocals??

  36. THE GREAT LACEFRONCE. November 19, 2013

Basic FLOPstink was one of the biggest FLOPS of all time. His new album “Ciara” isn’t far behind…flop flop flop

  37. Antonio November 20, 2013

Yall tired ass Aaliyah stans kill me. That b**** does not have a legacy in any way. The only reason ppl say she’s so legendary is because she died young. When she dropped the Aaliyah album, she got shitted on by Alicia Keys, Britney, Janet, Usher and Destiny’s Child. Then they make up so many lies about her.
    1. Aaliyah was going to win Best R&B Album but never can provide any factual proof of the Recording Academy saying that
    2. Aaliyah was casted in Fighting Temptations, Sin City, A Star is Born, Cradle 2 the Grave and landed the Pepsi deal Beyoncé got but never can provide any proof. The only movies she was casted in was The Matrix sequels in Nona Gaye’s role, NOT Jada’s role. Now Whitney did say she considered Aaliyah for the first Sparkle remake.
    3. Then they shade Ciara’s success when Brandy effortlessly murdered Aaliyah’s star.
    4. Age Aint Nothing but a Number and One In a Million both only peaked #18 on the BB200 while The Evolution sold nearly 350k the first wk and debuted at #1 on the BB200 and Goodies and Fantasy Ride both peaked at #2. Aaliyah only had 4 Top 10s on the Hot 100, while Ciara has 9 plus 14 Top 10s on the R&B/HH charts, 3rd behind MJB and Beyoncé. Ciara won the 1st Billboard Woman of the Year in 2008, won 1 Grammy, and 3 ASCAP Awards and even beat Beyoncé in 2007 for Best Female R&B Artist at the World Music Awards. So tbqh, Ciara has actually achieved more, Aaliyah’s death just made white ppl take an interest in her.

  38. leon November 20, 2013

    male powerhouse voice LUKE JAMES

  39. Bee November 20, 2013

Um what is he talking about? R. Kelly and Usher aren’t powerhouse vocalists?

    • Absolved November 20, 2013

Not really. Both are just above average, but neither are explosive big-voiced singers.

  40. Daniel November 20, 2013

False ass statement. R&B has plenty of powerhouse vocals on the female front. Beyonce, Fantasia, Monica… And even Tamar and K.michelle on the come up to an extent.

On the male front, Luke James is the best thing to happen since Luther Vandross.

Once again, Dream don’t know what the f*** he’s talking about. He needs to worry about his pencil lead certified albums instead of what everyone else is doing.

  41. Joey November 20, 2013

Nah, theres John Legend, Joe and i wish Tevin Campbell would make a comeback

  42. Joey November 20, 2013

Beyonce doesn’t have an r&b voice, she has a pop voice so his opinion clearly doesn’t count

  43. Joey November 20, 2013

These weak ass producers always overlook Fantasia. They clearly don’t know craft

  44. Joey November 20, 2013

This maybe the case if you’re talking sales but Aaliyah’s music and vocals surpass Ciara’s

  45. credits November 20, 2013

luke james will slay both of their voices. but they’re all great! 🙂

  46. Nick November 22, 2013

I think Luke James is has a powerhouse voice, especially in comparison to the relevant artist out now – particularly in respect to the guys he named.
