Today marks one year since the passing onto eternity of the King of Pop Michael Jackson. Despite 365 long days having passed, the reality that Michael is no longer with us is still hard to fathom. Indeed, during his life, Michael enjoyed an unparallel level of super-stardom, leading many to class him as ‘other worldly’, a fictional character of sorts – who doesn’t die. Unfortunately, the reality of his mortality coldly hit the world on June 25th 2009.
However, today shouldn’t be one for mourning. Rather, the life of this incredible performer, philanthropist, and all-round legend should be celebrated. Cliché-sounding perhaps; yet, in the 50 years Michael spent on this earth, he shared a gift, a talent, which many of us will never see topped in our lifetime. To have experienced such history, I am eternally thankful for.
A lifelong fan, Michael’s passing hit me hard. As a late 80’s baby, Michael Jackson came to represent my childhood (from dancing around to his music at ANY and EVERY opportunity to watching ‘Thriller’ only to run away in a delightful fright when he turned into the monster “go away!”). In later years, I came to appreciate his artistry, as well as the depth and breadth of his message. Indeed, my love for Michael’s music birthed my love for music more generally – hence the eventual creation of this very site. His death (made all the more ‘real’ by the fact I was due to see him – front row centre – at his ‘This Is It’ show), therefore, left me feeling as if a significant part of my childhood died when he did.
Yet with time, comes fresh perspectives. While Michael may physically be no longer with us, he is still very much alive – as are the music and memories he left us with. Put simply, greatness is immortal. Michael Joseph Jackson is immortal.
Therefore, on this the one year anniversary of his passing, That Grape Juice salutes the undisputed King of Pop, King of Dance…King of Music – Michael Jackson.
Long live the King!

Michael’s death hit me hard. I am also an 80s baby and I remember watching his Superbowl performance and video premieres for Remember The Time and Black or White LIVE when they aired. My favorite Michael Jackson’s video and performance is Man In the Mirror. When he did the combination of The Way You Make Me Feel/Man In The Mirrori at the 1988 Grammys, I was speechless. I still remembering the first time I saw this performance at age 13 when VH1 was doing some kind of Grammy Special. He truly was one of kind. No performer will ever match this man’s artistry and talent as an entertainer and musician.

You inspired me since I was 6 yrs. old. You was the first music artist I liked and mimic’d as a kid. I wanted to be just like you. I used to sing and dance for my family members and friends from age 6 to like 12. Sometimes I got money for it lol. Sometimes I just did it because I knew all your dance steps. lol. I always felt like you was the only artist that related to me, through your music. I can sit here and talk about you all day long. I will keep it short. I just want to say it seemed like yesterday I was in LA in front of your door yelling your name out hoping to get a chance to say hi and how much you inspired me. But you was in the house not feeling well. Then weeks later you was on the news in times square, and my world just stopped for a minute. This is exactly how it was for me too. Having been born in 1989 and missing out on the height of “Thriller” I still immediately on first listening fell hard in love for the songs of that album and was fascinated by the man himself. Michael Jackson is the only artist whose music which was released from before I was born is rocked on my iPod and still sounds as fresh and as modern, and BETTER, than pretty much all the music out today.
From ages 2 to 102, this man’s gift was known and respected, all over the world.

The word negro , has its roots from the word negus, which means king. 2 African kings proudly used the term to describe themselves, and in the ancient world, when Africans ruled, negus, a roman term was given to Africans, because Africans were held in high esteem. So, MJ was a true negus(king). His talent and charity has already been demonstrated by his legions of fans, we don’t need to continue to lists, because we know who the King was.
But to the people who continue to slander MJ name, please research and look at FBI, police records, court trial documentations, Alphondite Jones book, and you will know that there has never been any valid reason to say that MJ was a molestor. So, please gets your facts straight, before jumping on the bandwagon of people who destroyed this man’s character. I’ve read the reports, and testimony and the backstory of the 93 accusations and MJ was set up, so know what you are talking about. Research.

Aaliyah was allright, but let’s be honest, she was no Superstar in the making. People are giving her too much credit. And for the record, MJ was a legend before he went solo. At the ripe age of 17 he became a living legend. His art and music was and is still relevant because what he did was groundbreaking. You must be young, you would know that the reason why people loved MJ music videos, was because they were creative, different, imaginative, thought provoking. The reason why people talk about his art because he talked about the human condition, the plight of the environment. He sang songs that made people take notice of causes. You want people to talk about Tupac, Selena, Aaliyah, tell me how was their music ground -breaking, ok, their art was cut short because of their deaths, but in reality, Tupac, sure he talked about positive things, and was talented, but on the flip side of that, he was a gangsta rapper, who also spoke about violence, and let’s not forget that each time , he went to jail, it was because of allegations of r***. Tupac was convicted, MJ was not. Sure he has that arts center in North Carolina, but hey, his mother created that and set that into motion. Maybe while he was alive, instead of fighting with his fans with Suge Knight, he should have been doing that himself. And Aaliyah, her music could have been more , but it wasn’t, because the girl neither had the voice or the dance moves to move up on the entertainment sprectum. The one reason why people remember her and want to paint her in a could be legend, is because sadly she died a horrible death. But, don’t give credit where credit isn’t earned. I know this generation is accustomed to mediocrity and sub par garbage that is played on the radio, forced consumption of the masses. but that still doesn’t equate to genius. I’m not a hater, I just want people to realize that MJ was the real deal. And as far as the dance moves, ok, MJ in later years did moves that his fans wanted to see, and I guess you didn’t watch the Invisible video, those were new moves, and his historic lean in 1987 Smooth Criminal is still groundbreaking because noone tries to do them. Just because he did the same moves that the fans wanted to see, doesn’t mean that he couldn’t wipe the floor with Neyo, JT, Usher, artists you so want to get the accolades. When they start putting in the work like MJ, and have his talent, and write more about posistivity, than maybe in some ant’s dream, would they become the King of Pop. Give Respect, you don’t like MJ, but please know what you are talking about. MJ died, the world stopped. When Aaliyah died, the only people that cared was the urban audience, and that’s a sad fact.
