Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.
So, just as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’ allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.
On this #FBF we’ll press play on ‘I’m Your Angel,’ the unlikely pairing of R&B bad boy R. Kelly and powerhouse vocalist Celine Dion. Written and produced by Kelly, the touching tune – lifted from his chart-topping third studio album ‘R.’ – came as quite the unexpected departure from the power-pop ballads that lined Dion’s repertoire (see: ‘My Heart Will Go On’ which dominated charts the year prior). In Kelly’s case, the departure – while not as unexpected – was certainly a welcomed retreat from his standard sexualized fare.
Regardless, fans welcomed ‘Angel’ with open ears, arms, and wallets as the tune soared to #1 on the Hot 100 and enjoyed its second week on the perch this week in 1998 (and wasn’t dethroned until 5 weeks later by Brandy‘s ‘Have You Ever’). Tuck in below for your flight down memory lane and see what other familiar faces you see lining the top 25 this week in 1998.

I miss he music of the 90s. I do have to say Justin is slaying with 3 songs in the top 10!!!
*the
F^ck a Bieber. Are you serious?
seriously though, stop it with the R Kelly stanning. After his peeing debacle, NO ONE IS JUMPING BACK ON THAT and should just figure out a new path in music for the newbies… His music doesn’t even sound the same anymore, almost like he’s trying too hard. just STAHP
A real singing queen selling millions like it was nothing.
“Let´s talk about Love” sold 25-30 million albums that year… and Titanic Soundtrack 25-30 million copies more. At the SAME TIME!!!
And don´t get me started with that top 20 for the hot 100 full of diversity. This weeks top is laughable except for Adele. Justin Beiber 3 songs… LMAO
YASSSS at Trippin’ by Total, it’s a bop! I don’t know why Keisha won’t reunite with the girls.

That song isone of my faves I play it all the time
Celine´s Xmas album is like the second best selling ever after Mariah´s btw. Such stunning and hair-raising vocals on it.
Wow look at the diversity of 98 vs the current billboard hot 100 a major difference. Music today does not begin to compare.
I don’t recall this song at all. But this shows how the “divas” of the 80’s and eraly 90s were clinging to the urban stars. But as soon when Kelly got cought up, those pop singers act like they didn’t know him, lol. EVEN when 10 years prior he married a 15 year old. Shows how fake these artist and labels are.
.
This was RIGHT before the bubblegum pop/Disney has beens would come and take over. The LATE 90s was a very bad time in music imo, pop was trash. People wonder what happen to music like this? The same as the music in the 80s, 70s, 60s, time moves on and everything changes. Our parents were saying the same thing to us in the eraly 2000s and their parents said the same in the early 80s. Just part of time.
You are right to a point as when I was growing up in the late 90’s and still loving music up until 07 I new older people including my mum loving what was out now at 30 my 16year old nephew likes some of the stuff I grew up on and hate most of the stuff out now. I even read an article a while back talking about the urban music scene in the 2000’s and how it hit it’s peak in 07 I had to admit that I agreed with the magazine and the djs
Keep your wack editorials, you corny homo.
There wasn’t any pop in the late 90s.I don’t know why “baby one more time” (Brittany Spears)is classified as pop. That’s a R&B song. If that was a brandy or Janet song people would stick R&B in it.Backstreet boys where doing R&B music too.
Pure ignorance.
Tank released a new single today! I just discovered it while listening to Goapele on Spotify. Please post about it Rashad/Dadvid/Sam! R&B needs as much promo as possible–especially the truly talented and underrated R&B artists. Oh, and the song is called Better for You. 🙂
This song was cute.
I love, love, love “Iris” by Goo Goo Dolls 😀
The funny thing about this chart is Brandy’s Have You Ever was already #1 on the Hot 100 Airplay for 9 weeks (in total) and would have already been #1 on the Hot 100 but Atlantic Records refused to send the single to retail until after Christmas to push sales of the album. By the time the single went to #1 on the Hot 100, it was already in decline which is why it only spent 2 weeks at #1 and allowed R.Kelly & Celine to have this #1 single. #BrandyFan4Life
Classic example of the mature and classy music R. Kelly can do.
