Welcome to Retro Rewind, the new TGJ original feature that invites our readers on a journey to Entertainment’s glorious past.
Today, as news of a ‘Fresh Prince of Bel Air’ reboot heats excites the show’s fans we celebrate one of the show’s more powerful scenes.
In it, Will (aptly portrayed by Will Smith) attempts to build a relationship with the father he was abandoned by as a child only to find himself faced with hurt and disappointment when the man (portrayed by Ben Vereen) rejects him.
Showcasing layers African-American characters are often written without, Will’s cracked delivery of “how come he doesn’t want me” would go on to stand as one of the television’s most memorable (and heartbreaking) lines.
Watch above and, as ever, let us know…
Probably one of my favorite scenes in TV history. Powerful scene.
Very powerful. I remember this scene vividly and all my emotions attached. That was his opening door to becoming the a list actor he is today. Man I love Will and so.happy for all his success.
The day he became an actor …that was a powerful moment on tv.
I remember seeing that when it was on TV, that had something in my eye when I saw it, that showed growth in acting for Will Smith that deserved an Emmy.

i remember watching this back in the day, very power so real.
Still gets me in my feelings till this day. and i’ve seen this scene a million times
