Our good friends over at SOHH were fortunate enough to have the rare opportunity of interviewing Pop superstar Janet Jackson. For all those wondering about the status of the ‘Discipline’ album, read on….(it’s not good): I had the pleasure of interviewing Janet Jackson yesterday as part of a teleconference with a select few fellow bloggers… And I’m sorry to tell you guys this but it’s looking like the label is not planning to allow any more singles from Discipline to be released.
Here’s what Janet had to say when I asked her what her next single would be:
“That’s pretty difficult to say, only because of the record label at this point. We started off with “Feedback” and the label and myself haven’t quite seen eye to eye since the “Feedback” single so they’ve kind of basically stopped all promotion. I’m trying to figure out a way to say this, but just to say it and to be quite honest, they just stopped all promotion whatsoever on the album so I don’t think you’re going to hear another single off this album.”
Damn. What is going over there at Island???
She also revealed some details about her upcoming “Rock Witchu Tour”:
“It’s a completely different show, like nothing before in the past. My real goal is to try and do every single I’ve ever had… so I have to figure out how to fit that into two hours and yet give them enough so they don’t feel hungry for more of that song in particular.”
As for why she chose to title the tour after her song “Rock Wit U”:
“It’s fitting to me, fitting to what the show will be like. It’s a dance show, it’s all upbeat I want it to be a party onstage, a party in the arena. I’ve always said when people come to these shows I want them to forget about all their problems all the drama in their lives and just have a good time, just let it go for a couple hours and bring some happiness into their lives. It’s going to be one big party, I want to ‘Rock Witchu.'”
Last but not least Janet wanted to make sure fans know she has been keeping up with the internet talk about her not making to Europe to promote Discipline:
“I just want to let the fans know because I’ve been reading a lot what the bloggers have been saying about the record and not hearing it on the radio and stuff like that, so I just wanted to let them know where things were as well and where it was all coming from. I’ve heard people talking about me not coming to Europe in support of the record just to let them know that it was definitely in my heart to go to Europe and to support this album but it’s about teamwork, it’s not something I can totally do on my own. Unfortunately things have turned out the way that they have with the differences between the label and myself, which we have been having for the most part from the beginning. So I just want to tell them again thank you very much for all the love and all the support and I they understand the entire situation and I’m really excited to see everybody on tour. I’m really looking forward to that it’s going to be a lot of fun.”
Wow. Drama at another label. I guess this explains why the ‘Disicpline’ project seems to have been halted so abruptly. There’s unconfirmed reports that Janet and LA Reid were not seeing eye to eye over the the release of the album’s second single – Janet’s preference being ‘Rock With U’. It’s a shame things have turned out as such, as the album was very solid IMO. It’ll be very interesting to see her next move after the tour i.e. new album?, new label? etc. I, for one, am hoping that she irons out her differences with Island Def Jam, as their promo efforts for their roster (Mariah, Rihanna etc) are largely unmatched by rival labels (Sony/Beyonce) aside…

Was I the only to see this coming you can’t have two divas at the same label with out any tension but it dates back to 01 when Janet had Virgin on lock and Mimi came to join the family at a point when her career hit the skids and Janet was making big moves over there Virgin stuck by the artist generating the most heat and left Mimi for dead. Now fast forward to 08 Mimi is the queen at Island being that they are still eating off TEOM and enjoying the success of this album. Being that Janet is not generating any heat now as labels do they stand behind the artist who fairing decent on the charts as they should.

Hm, I personally never thought that a artist with Janet’s history would have a problem of helping guide her own album. But I’m also sure they thought she would sell more than 400,000 copies in the U.S. She’s between a rock and a hard place.

What looser goes out of thei way to comment on an artist they don’t like. i never understood that. Anyway, Janet’s talent goes so much further than Mariah’s. Mariah can sing, but after that what has she got? Nothing. Besides she sounds like she’s smoked her longs away. i’m not even worried because no artist has nor can ever come close to what Janet has accomplished. I wish she would realize the potential she has to run her own s***. really what does it take to promote an album? banners, flyers, appearances, etc. she doesn’t need a label for any of that. she can take over a whole city as a surprise. that alone will get some attention. so unless LA REID plans to take over the world, he and his artists that he kisses ass so much for aint got nothing on Janet.
Janet and Mariah have nothing in common so I don’t understand why the are always compared. In this case I agree with Def Jam. The amount of money that went into promoting feedback and her album’s release was way too much for an artist that barely sold $100K in its first week. Janet should have let the label decide onthe second single because “Rock Witchu” sucked and did not bring any additional sales for the album.

No, we don’t feel stupid. As a Janet fan I must ask like a few others why they compare Janet and Mariah. They are two totally different things. Mariah may have a stronger voice, but she is no where near Janet on overall performance. Mariah is stale and stiff and half dresses so that at least some of the populaiton can be entertained. It’s not a surprise to me that Janet is having problems with her label. Same thing happened with Toni Braxton. Her last two albums were on point, but there was no promotion. I bought both albums after they had been on the shelves for a minute. Because I had no idea when the album was coming out.

I am a former intern at IDJ I must say after most of your post you guys are so wrong about this situation One Janet was given the proper promotion money, she really did not want to promote the album until a week before its release. Two her main focus was to clear up her issues with MTV because their audience usually buys the album she was also MTV artist of the week which was part of her promotion budget and even after release she decided to keep her schedule limited as if she was not feeling her project so the label has to promote other artists as well As for MC she was willing to promote when it was time to and also LA made her start promotion a little earlier then planned.

I heard Janet was very sick with a flu when the album came out and promotion was limited because of that. I think it is VERY STRANGE that an older artist like Janet would put out Discipline, when she did not write any songs on the CD. All of her previous CDs she was listed as a songwriter composing over 80% of the lyrics on each album.
I agree that the label is not at fault for Janet’s low sales. Janet had a huge budget that was spent on promoting feedback and marketing the album (VH1/MTV). If you were in charge of a label you would pull the plug on her budget too since her opening sales were a big dissapointment.
All this do not make any sense at all!
