Radio is no longer indicative of the general public’s tastes or interests.
For, thanks to the streaming platforms like Tidal, Apple and Spotify, the critical mass are now aware that artists once deemed to be “past it” are anything but…thanks to them.
A good example?
The R&B songbird Monica who enjoyed monumental success in the 90s but has struggled to move units in recent years as easily as she did during the decade.
Full story below…
As of this morning, her jam ‘The First Night‘ has been streamed 3.2 million times on Spotify .
An impressive feat on a number fronts.
Why?
Besides the fact that it reached this milestone 19 years after its release, the cut’s success in Spotiverse joined the album version of her Brandy-backed bop ‘The Boy is Mine‘ to push streams of her LP of the same name over the 50 million spins point.
It really is astounding.
As Monica and her peers seek fresh ways to impact audiences more inclined to tune into younger stars it’s important for them to work alongside Spotify if they are to gauge who is listening to their material and where they are doing so.
Once equipped with these facts and figures the mission to create content just as impactful as their earlier material will no longer stand as an impossible one.
How?
Songs can be written, set lists can be arranged and budgets can be assigned to reach those who are truly interested in supporting the next chapter of her career, and not wasted on campaigns designed to appease those who aren’t.
Mrs. Brown isn’t the only R&B royal making waves on the platform.
The British girl group Eternal have swept up 1.2 million spins with their single ‘Stay’ while their cut ‘Angel of Mine‘ (which was covered by Monica in 1998) has been listened to 2.7 million times as of this morning.
Monica’s discography is iconic!
Say that again! I love monica!

She sings the heck out of every song! But we all know, that girl can sang! *whitney voice*
Girl and every single on her debut album as well ?
Ok she’s a great VOCALIST!! Hopefully Brandy doesn’t read this & says that Whitney Houston wouldn’t agree..??♂️~>✌??
Monica has hits for days. Arista really should’ve promoted this album more, especially since The Boy Is Mine single was promoted out of Brandy’s budget. Right Here Waiting, Ring Da Bell, Cross The Room and Keep It To Myself would have been hits if released as singles.
I think it is still important for older artists to have traditional campaigns. Believe it or not a lot of people over the age of 30 do not stream music but rather purchase physical CDs and buy concert tickets (at the right price of course).
That’s me. I never stream. I buy music and I’m always ready for a concert.
Y’all write some really random unnecessary articles lol. I loved this album when it first came out!
David does most of the filler articles lol
Probably because he’s too busy picking up Gold plaques for songs he wrote. ☕️
I should make a move but I won’t.
Most fans & quite a few people in general enjoy the physical albums more. See Taylor’s fan base.. Most of Kendrick Lamar’s first week album sales came from physical units..
My song! Mo had three straight #1 singles from this album.
And then a mega flop
Really..her continued success of bagging more #1’s and certifications says otherwise.
#When trying to throw shade fails
After the storm was after this album. Which was 2x platinum & a #1 album.
Remember this sweet heart, Monica is the only artist to have a #1 song in the 90’s, 2000’s, and 2010.
I wish there would be a bigger push to get Barry Henkerson and Blackground Records to release Aaliyah’s last couple of albums on all streaming services. Because if not, I feel like her legacy is soon to be forgotten. Especially with the only music available being the first album, which in retrospect is very inappropriately titled and may actually tarnish her legacy.
Look at Ms Rude Monica standing so cordially and pleasantly with Brit & Nick. We blacks sure are nice and calm around whites. If she was with a young black female I’m sure she would have her Ms Diva Thang face on.
