Ashanti‘s biggest hits may have been mobilised by her cute coos, but these days the R&B belle seems intent on proving the potency of her pipes.
Case in point last night’s showing at the NBA game between the New York Knicks and the Golden State Warriors.
The 38-year-old took front stage center to perform the US National Anthem (the ‘Star Spanned Banner’).
How did she do? Head below to find out…
Granted some corners of the vocal were sharp and we’re not sure belty songs of this ilk best suit her voice, this was decent holistically.
Say what folk will about Ms. Douglas, but there’s no denying she does have a sweet tone. If only she had fresh material out to further showcase it.
We’re just as baffled as she is the next person about her ever promised new project. However, we’re hopeful it surfaces sooner rather than later. Because, like we keep stressing, it’s grating to watch her effectively bench herself while her peers soar.
Indie is a great route for some, but we’re yet to be convinced that it’s working out all that well for Ashanti.
Sure, she’s not missing a check and is a shrewd enough businesswoman to have multiple, healthy revenue streams. But surely all of her activities would benefit from her having well-promoted music in the marketplace too?
Anyway, enough of our rambling. What are…
Ashanti’s biggest continuous mistake is to remain as an independent artist . She has had little to any mainstream success since being independent. I get it she wants to keep most of her coins , but it just appears she is her own worst enemy .
hi as entitled as you are to your opinion lets enlighten u a bit
visibility does not mean success.
lets do the maths
Say hypothetically; Ashanti new album sells 20,00 copies (as lets be honest she’s not gonna do ella mai numbers of 79k)
major label royalities for an estabilished artist like ashanti 20% (new artists 10-15%)
$10 x 20, 000 (at 20% royalty) =40k
$10 x 10,000 (independently ) = 100k
Ella Mai’s first week take home.
shes probably making minium 300- 500k USD A year from shows and royalties. shes 38. So shes earning the same as a top doctor or lawyer she’s doing just fine.
The reason y u guys have no black female artists is – coz u guys r more racist than whites holding your own to unrealistic standards. White people don’t hold taylor swift n the kylie’s n the Cheryl Cole’s too such a high standard black people need to stop being so critical.
Lol , I don’t need a lesson in numbers . Nothing you said here changes anything I said..I didn’t say she had no success… I said no mainstream success , Your just expanding on my point – Ashanti will clearly make more of a direct profit on her own , but with a label behind her Ashanti would open more opportunities pushing her back into the mainstream , giving her the potential to earn more accolades and strengthen her brand which in turn would increase her earning capability . So , I see no lies in my comment . Nor any reason to bring up the ‘race’ card ? but whatevs.
I’ve made my point – Bye.
You dont know what racist means in America. You are wrong and racist yourself. I suggest you go watch a Tyrese or Stephanie Mills interview where they speak on WHITES STOPPING BLACK ARTIST FROM SUCCEDING. Whites have stolen every single Black genre and have systematically oppressed blacks. Did your research and stop being ignorant. The black population is very small here. Speak for yourself
P.s that vocal was not it …
She did great! Thank god nothing close to that fergie bs and grape juice stfu yall kiddie reviews are dumb af that’s why your website is a flop like it is.
Loved it!
I didn’t recognize her
She sounded cool, who won the game? ?
It was better then ciaras.
She was good love it go Ashanti.
She ate that ???
She sound like she always do mediocre at best , everybody knows Ashanti cant sing she was jus was jus a pretty face . Her stage name does not fit her at all the Africian Ashanti Warrior was a force to be reckon with she cant compare in anyway at all . her time came and went….Love and Light
Did Ashanti sound good, thats debatable, but this site and other on it will applaud Jennifer Lopez, Taylor Swift and Britney knowing that Ashanti can sing better than them bother (or in some cases for them)
Not all black singers need to be powerhouses, let them live and be successful like the lesser singers that are white and litter the charts.
@Dev – I agree. (Posted on wrong person originally.)
It was solid. I love Ashanti. She did what she does. Consistent. She looked good. The wig density was a bit much
@Dev – I agree.
@Fidel… – I meant to post ahahahaha. Your comment is too funny in regards to her wig.
I don’t understand how she’s benching herself if she’s being booked and stacking her money ??♂️
She sounds great good for her.
Not impressed. On another note, she looks cheap as F-CK. Her outfit is a tragedy.
#Awful
She’s been touring worldwide for a year or two now, plus she been working with Lifetime tv with scripts and being paid by millionaires to perform at private events so she’s been doing good in her lane….this performance was good however the tone Ashanti has her higher register can be grating sometimes as her strong point is lower to mid register.
This was a perfectly acceptable performance, but she should have rehearsed this with a mic and recorded it. That would have allowed her to know how to adjust the distance of the mic from her voice to smooth out the jarring volume jumps as she transitioned to the higher parts of her range.
