Mariah Carey continues to drum up buzz for her her fifteenth studio album ‘Caution,’ by gifting the masses another track.
This time in the form of funky number ‘A No No.’
The song samples Jeff Lorber’s ‘The Rain,’ which was popularly borrowed as the base of Lil Kim’s 90s classic ‘Crush On You.’
Mimi builds on it in her own way and you can hear her effort after the jump…
A smooth groove with ample replay value.
It may not be single material, but it makes for a solid listen in the context of the album, which we must say is shaping up to be a cohesive body of work.
‘Caution’ arrives November 16th via Epic Records.
She sounds good here.
Must be talking about her former manager. Love a Mimi kiss off record.
I don’t like it. So far Distance should have been her lead single. These other songs sound like forgettable filler and Distance is filler music too but the best out of all the forgettable tracks she has releases so far. MC needs to hire a better songwriting and production team or just do an album of classic covers.
Shut uuuuup
Queen don’t ever tell me to shut up b|tch. I f.uck wit real killas. You just a “killer lamb” aka a sissy who don’t know better but now u got your learn. Don’t make me put my foot up your ass. Oh u probably like that sh|t. Yuck.
Take you’re meds penicillin princess (prince). Sorry @Killer Lamb, that’s just TROLLmine the resident TGJ hermpahrodite, it talks a lot of mess but don’t mind it, it has chlamydia so it’s warped it’s brain
Shup up TRASHman da T*****. Every queen aint slow and ugly like u n|gga. “Killer Lamb” got the message so f.uck off ugly t***** sissy. U the one with A|Ds ad a bunch of other disgusting diseases. GUTTER TRASH
TROLLmine I know you’re jealous me but I can’t help it that I’m popular
This song sucks TROLLmane!. I like SWV’s take on this instrumental. Mariah’s song is inferior to that one! SWV – Love Like This (Featuring Lil Cease).
I like this track!!
She sounds good! She used to make songs like this and mix it up with Walter Afanasieff stuff! That would be ideal…but this is fun and breezy…short and sweet too! I know Kandi Burruss is examining those “No’s” in the first verse tho lol #NoScrubs
I like SWV – Love Like This way better. Mariah’s song is inferior to that one.
This should have been her first single
It’s a Yes! Why wasn’t this the lead single???
“In Portuguese it’s a no/ in Japanese it’s a no” lol. I love fun Mariah.
Mariah tries waaaaaay too hard to constantly miss the mark like this. There is nothing appealing about this track for a female star of her caliber. Why does she INSIST on releasing new music when it’s clear as day that she can no longer push units. I doubt the album will even sell 75,000 the first week — and that’s being more than generous.
BECAUSE AHE WANTS TO. SHE HAS NOTHING TO PROVE AT THIS POINT. LET HER DO HER. DAMN. I DOUBT SHES WORRIED ABOUT HOW MUCH THE ALBUM IS GOING TO SELL. SHES BEEN IN THE GAME 30 YEARS DOMINATING MORE THAN HALF OF THOSE YEARS. SHE HAS STATED OVER AND OVER AGAIN SHES MAKING MUSIC THAT FEELS GOOD TO HER. HOP OFF HER D*** AND BE GLAD A LEGEND LIKE HER IS STILL PUTTING OUT QUALITY ALBUMS. REMEMBER ITS NOT ABOUT QUANTITY ITS ABOUT QUALITY AND SHE ALWAYS DELIVERS ON HER ALBUMS. YALL WILL ONLY APPRECIATE LEGENDS WHEN THEYRE GONE. TRY SUPPORTING THEM WHIKE THEYRE HERE. SHEESH
This song is fiyah! And it is definitely single material. You are way out of touch.
Agreed this is better then with you
With you shouldn’t have been the single this should be it’s fire ? get a great video with some dancers and Kim on the remix and people will eat it up for the nostalgia and because it’s a bop
It’s just ok for me. No #POW moments and the vocals are too heavily influenced by the computer, current Mariah cannot do all those fast runs. I’ll wait for the album to fully judge but I’ve heard a bunch of “ok” tracks, nothing crazy amazing. Don’t gimme that “she has nothing to prove” nonsense. She’s only 49 she can still make great quality music not forgettable t***/millenial records
The whole negative comments thing is getting old. This sing is so easy vocally and she isn’t doing any runs in here, what are you talking about? Take your hateful ass somewhere else
Just because I’m not easily wowed by you and have critique over one of my favorite artists doesn’t mean it’s hate. You’re just one of those lambs that go on her 2018 youtube live videos talking about “yaaaassssss her emotions sounds like 1998 Mariah”- I’m not that kind of fan. I’m subjective
Alright, sounding nice very 90’s which I miss.
It’s so hard. ? On the one hand I love Mimi and have been with her since Vision of Love slayed my very existence.
Yes she has already proven herself, yes we want her to have fun, but a song ‘A No No’ when you know she can make songs like ‘Make It Look Good’ , ‘Beautiful’, ‘It’s Like That’, ‘Get Your Number’, ‘The Roof’ and ‘Honey’???? This song is practically a repetitive nursery rhyme. The song structure is so basic – AND YET – it’s all too apparent that she has dialled back the vocal theatrics present on MIAM and older hits – which means it more appropriate for her vocal range today and maybe easier to sing live for her.
It just feels that as a fan we are being short changed with all this basicness when we know she is capable of more ?
You are expecting from an artist instead of enjoying it for what it is. You can not expect anything from people no matter who they are.
She has stated that she is in a good place and wants to make some, just for laughs, music as well as her deep penned music.
The song A no no was never presented to us to be a song of deep meaning and vocal ranging, it was presented as a fun bop, and that it is.
You are exactly correct. SPOT ON.
And as I acknowledged, we want her to have fun, but where is the balance. So it will be 5 years between MIAM and the next album until we get substance? As a fan, that is a long time to wait. And by the way, consumer expectations sells records. Meet the expectation and you sell – fail to meet the expectation and you don’t. No one can continuously go on underselling and remain on a label. No fan wants their fave to be dropped.
SPEAKING OF THE 90’S https://youtu.be/f9p5cmh-pJY
My fave on the album so far then Distance and GTFO
“Slither out the door ? snakes ? in the grass it’s time to cut ✂️ The lawn”
Clearly about JigSaw… this needs a video ASAP and a Lil Kim Feature….. love it !! Love her screaming no down a tunnel ?????
Will be a banger on the radio…I love the ending…I said NO,nooo,no….Maria can have a fun bop or a deep ballad…I’m all in & saying yaaaasssss
Love it , would be a bop if lil Kim got on remix
It’s “A No No” for me! ??
Love it, can’t wait till someone will mash’s this up with Lil Kim’s crush on you
It’s a-ight. Not sure if it’s a hit, but it’s a solid effort. I think the sample takes this off trend. A new track with the same melodic structure might have worked better.
C R A P
I don´t know. I could enjoy a lot of teh songs in Elusive Chanteuse. But this one so far… no songs makes me love it. It´s obvious she has chosen to finally avoid notes she is not confortable with. Which is fine and I had been saying for years she needed to do that. BUT to compensate what i have been saying is that she should totally revamp her sound or make cute QUALITY songs. These are just forgettable little songs not even herself will pay attention to in a couple of years. I know it must be hard when you are not able to sing as you please. But come one! She cannot do a #beautiful type of songs with some punch? A “Royals” by Lorde type of song? It would eb easy to sing BUT ALSO appealing and a potential hit and critical win. So far my favorite is THE DISTANCE. All in all, Mariah´s vocals were in so much better shape in 2015 and 2016, much better, than what they are now. And I think this is the reason for all of this. These tracks are barely better or different to “I don´t” and other recent isolated releases by her. At least Elusive had GREAT songs like “Supernatural”, “Make it look good”, “Cry” and several more. That album was more than 4 years ago, and I think it is safe to say at this point that it was the last one where we could hear Mariah still trying to excel vocally. We won´t see it anymore.
Yeah I’m disappointed. The only people that are actually excited are ppl who just found Mariah in the last few years. The REAL true fans are not feeling this “trying to fit in” Mariah. It’s boring and forgettable
You’re so obnoxious. I’ve been listening to Mariah since her my all performance at Divas Live and again, this is a fun song. Mariah has been making fun songs for as long as I remember. She’s said multiple times that she’s in a great place and wanted to make fun songs. If you want ballads go listen to her old s*** and stfu
I like this along with the distance and GTFO are cool I even appreciate WY for what it is for I this point I want M to be having fun along with with the deep personal cuts that made her fans love her for me as long as she give a great album I am pleased with that all that other stuff she has been there done that.
@Gee – I totally agree. I really like this song. It’s fun and I think at this point she deserves to have some fun musically.
@SUPERSTAR she has been making “fun” songs for over 20 years. “Did I do that”, “x-girlfriend”, “up out my face”, “more than just friends”, “touch my body”, “thirsty”and I really could go on and on. It’s opposite, at this point she needs to stop chasing trends and work on some older more mature, yet s*** records. Toni Braxton’s type of music in 2018 is a lane of mature yet hot and current r&b. Mariah is making t*** records still and it’s stale. The “she’s having fun” excuse is tired because it’s not accurate. She’s out of touch is more like it
Furthermore, Mariah has a much wider fan base than Toni & she doesn’t have to make the same kinda records over & over.. You are reaching.
Mariah and Toni sell the same in 2018 boo Mariah ain’t moving units or pushing numbers they’re even except Toni won a Grammy like a year or two ago because of her quality music. But Mariah makes the same stuff over and over it just caters to teens which is why this is trash and will be forgotten like thirsty , I don’t, infinity and triumphant **yawns**
The way she sung the song is great for the song. She can have those sing sing songs for the album. Radio isn’t playing many songs styled like that anyway.
There are only 6 songs left that we haven’t heard and the 4 we have heard are vocally basic, unless the rest of the songs are “siiiiiing songs”(which I highly doubt) then this is really looking to be her worst album to date. Literally nothing she’s released is better than an album filler. A 10 track album should be an album packed with very potent music- not a bunch of fillers/b side/unreleased sounding stuff. I’m getting worried
The song is self-explanatory.
Omg Mariah…..
Lets go kitty kat…
Is the no in portuguese a reference to cristiano ronaldo?
Throw Lil Kim on the Remix, give us a colorful video and throw Mimi in a BIG t-shirt and we have a Winner!
I’d rather have her make songs that y’all consider vocally “basic” that suit her current vocal state and are more likely to be replicated or even attempted live than her try to push for those vocal acrobatics that she can only do in the studio after multiple takes. Y’all want her to be successful while sticking to the mature sound filled with platitudes and generalities that plagued her earlier 90s stuff as if that’s gonna bring her anymore success than “teenage/juvenile” songs like this? Have you listened to top 40 since 2010? Mature, grown-up sounding stuff don’t hit the charts anymore unless you’re Adele. It’s not selling out because she’s been making these types of songs since the late 90s, so her being called out for it just now is ridiculous. Y’all still can’t be pleased even when this has been her best album rollout since 2005. Of course there’s gonna be deeper cuts on the album. Obviously she isn’t trying to chase the charts anymore. She has not really cared about that since 2010. Just because she chose 4 cuts which you deem lightweight to introduce the album doesn’t mean the entire album’s gonna be that way. Let the legend make the music she wants. Appreciate that this woman still exists, especially when we have lost so many legends in the past decade alone.
Almost half her album has been released and it’s boring. The only music Mariah has made that has hit any chart recently is the ORGANIC, heavy alternative r&b song “beautiful”.. so your “what’s on the charts” logic makes no sense as Mariah’s ONLY chart success this decade is an ADULT MATURE SONG. Don’t be mad because some of us have expectations and are disappointed that almost half the songs from this album are released and they’re all average. She doesn’t need to be belting to make a great, grown and sèxy mature song she just doesn’t have to make this filler trash, forgettable nonsense either. She needs to do better and come stronger. This is a very weak output from her
No one’s getting mad, hun. Just dial back and be more realistic with the expectations. Ask yourself – why should I care abour her ever charting if she no longer doesn’t? I am just being appreciative of what she’s giving right now. You think her new out put is boring? I think it’s already miles better than most of the Memoirs album. Her 2014 album had good cuts but also featured her mostly straining and pushing the limits of her post 2010 voice and was let down by a horrible release strategy and unfortunate experiences. This time is the first time since 2008, maybe even 2005, that her team has had a decent idea and approach in handling an album release. You and others think it’s boring? Then let’s just agree to disagree because I and others see this as her first set of material in years that features her going out of her comfort zone – seeking producers that she hasn’t worked with before, dabbling in more current sounds – it makes her feel less like the relic most of the current music-buying public (a.k.a. later millennials and generation Z kids) consider her to be. #Beautiful charted out of a confluence of different good things – it featured Miguel way back when he was considered hot commodity (it even sounded and featured more of him that most remarked that it seemed more like his song), it came out when Mariah was on AI, it charted when YouTube views and streaming numbers did not hold a significant bearing on chart position, and it genuinely was a great song that was a new sound for her that just happened to be an grown-up track. Mariah hasn’t been all the rage for a decade now, and she has grown to accept that, yet record companies still want to sign her despite mostly abysmal chart performance. Ageism is real and even more brutal for female singers. The best singers over 40 can do now is make a moderate initial splash. Where’s Made For Now? Dinero? In an era where most kids prefer to stream and purchase music from younger artists because it’s just natural for them to relate to and gravitate towards people closer to their age, radio is just a fraction of what constitutes success these days. And trends are more fickle and ephemeral these days. #Beautiful charted 5 years ago during friendlier times, when throwbacks to older, classic sounds were more welcomed (hence the success of The 20/20 Experience, Blurred Lines and Yours Truly). These days, if you’re gonna go retro, then it’s about the 90s. And even when Mariah does follow that trend, which she does now, she still sounds different from everyone else because she puts her own stamp on it, and the results sound like they come from a seasoned veteran who knows what she’s doing rather than a struggling wannabe. All that good stuff and yet none of that points to her really succeeding. So the best way to enjoy her music these days is really to be grateful she’s making new songs, when she could have easily decided to retire years ago. She’s looking great, her voice is sounding better on the Asian leg of her tour, she finally has a team that doesn’t employ ancient promotional methods, her new album title doesn’t sound childish or obnoxious which has music that mostly doesn’t try to desperately recapture her former glories, she’s in a great place in her personal life, and she’s been her most creative and daring (at least by her standard, knowing her tendency to keep working with the same old people) in years. That enough is cause for celebration. This song’s her most fun in a long time with meme-able lyrics, clever pop culture references, a nice classic sample, an undeniable bounce and she actually sounds engaged. Enjoy.
This is easily Mariah’s weakest material to date. I’ve never ever heard four songs off of any of her albums and been scared but after 4 years after her last amazing album I’m scared and there’s only six songs left. But hey I’m ok and come to terms with the fact that this will be her weakest album musically and vocally and I’m ok wit that. You can make whatever excuses you want but the fact of the matter this music is mediocre at best. Her most bland and uninspired ever in more ways than one. After such a strong album like MIATEC I’m disappointed. And stop acting like “ohhh this is a comfortable range so she will be able to sing it better live” nonsense.. she lipped GTFO at the iHeart music festival and it was boring… she lipped with you at the AMA’s and it was boring… and she didn’t even have the audacity to re-record a new vocal lip sync track, she just popped in the cd, stood there waving her fingers like she was doing something and lip sang to the studio version like Britney Spears does, minus moving around. L If you’re happy with this, then ok. But for most true Mariah fans (real fans, not delusional Stan’s or yes fans) it’s a let down. She can make good music still but this isn’t it. Still love her tho, she needs to reevaluate her musical muses and inspirations, her output is stale, uninspired and can easily be recreated by any artist out right now and done waaaaaay better. This is not the Mariah Carey standard. Not old Mariah, not new Mariah.. it’s bad and sad. 4 years for this ? Smh. This fits nowhere in her nearly flawless discography. CHOP
You’re writing way too much. `The Distance’ is incredible & this is great too. Everything doesn’t have to be super deep. This album has a different vibe than the other ones. It’s very contemporary. And in terms of her recent music, if it gets great exposure/airplay then a lot of people/newer fans would probably like it. These essays are pointless.
Also, she doesn’t need to belt everything. A lot of fans/people like the new vibe. So that’s that. She’ll probably have a few of those songs. But radio doesn’t play too many sing sing kinda songs.
@theMan I said what I said if you don’t like it that’s fine but my point still stands, this music is stale. There’s already a way better remake of Lil Kim’s “crush on you” and that’s Ariana Grande (Mariah jr) featuring Big Sean “right here”. I think her eternally twelve mindset is getting in the way. Her music is truly uninspired and forgettable- her worst ever. 4 songs in and nothing great yet- I’m worried. I hope the last 6 songs are POW but for the simple fact she has “I don’t” on the Japanese release of this a

Here’s hoping the other 6 songs prove me wrong
Honey, first of all, Right There is in no way better than A No No. There’s a reason it did not do better than The Way despite having a more popular sample. At least A No No has some attitude, biting lyrics and Mariah varies her vocal delivery. And if she makes her new songs to your standard or liking? Will it stop her from lipping? You have to realize that it’s really not music that had ruined Mariah’s image throighout the years. It’s her bad career choices and her constant bad lipping. Being on AI made her look like a bitchy, insecure diva, and not even the good music in MIAMTEC did anything to turn that around. Quality is subjective, arbitrary, so what you deem subpar may be excellent to others. MIAMTEC fell on deaf ears despite quality. None of it is really remembered by the public outside of the fans. Yup, even #Beautiful. This album will sadly probably suffer the same fate. But I’m still here for the ride. You clearly feel different and it’s okay. If the 6 other tracks that come out aren’t to your Mariah standard, then I guess you have already outgrown her and it’s time to move on to others. It will be way easier than sticking to an artist who clearly does what she wants anyway. It just to happens that this batch of songs are probably not for you. Maybe the next will be more to your liking.
“Right there “ is a million times better than “a no no”. You’re a delusional s*** and that’s fine, we can’t have a healthy debate because you don’t use logic. Anyway enjoy ur lackluster Mariah music, I’ll stick to her good stuff and hope the other 6 songs don’t bore the world like the first 4. Happy Friday ??♀️
And if you think every fan of every artist has liked every album they’ve put out you’re even more delusional than I thought. Move on? Please I’ve rocked with Mariah way before you were on YouTube pretending her 2018 AIWFC intro is as good as 1998’s. Get out ur feelings. The songs are wack and she’ll just have to come harder and more appropriate next time.
Sure, I’ll still answer that without having to resort to name-calling and personal insults about one’s use of logic or way of thinking because daggers aren’t really my style. Right There is not as good as A No No. I have not been a “Yass queen” stan, especially not on YouTube, and I have been a fan of Mariah’s even during her turbulent times in the early 2000s and I am not a fan of all Mariah albums especially those albums during the early Tommy years and MOAIA. I’m sorry to tear up this image of me you have conjured in your head. And yes, while we all wait with bated breath for the other 6 songs to drop (and you do so with dread and CAUTION), I’ll definitely enjoy the music that we have now because it’s definitely an improvement over Triumphant, Infinity, Why You Mad and Infamous.
I’m really sorry to say that I don’t like any of the new music, and this is from one of the people on his feet the whole time when Mariah performed on the Lionel tour. None of the songs have anything special. You can say she has nothing to prove, but an artist should want to keep their legacy shining. Kids and teens today know who Mariah is, but ask them if they like her music of the last 10 years and you’ll get a no 9/10 times. It’s a real shame.
That’s mostly because kids these days would naturally relate to artists who are closer to their age than someone who is pushing fifty. It’s an entirely different generation. They probably see MJ as a talented yet wacko child m*******, Whitney as a crackhead who lost her voice, and Mariah, MJB, Madonna and Celine as washed up has beens who their used to listen to. Listening to the hits these days mostly really make you question their taste anyways, so it’s almost a lost cause trying to explain to them what these legends meam to music. That’s where the real shame lies.
This is not legend Mariah music no matter what age group is looking at it. This is obscure, bland, generic current r&b trendy music that sounds like everything else. It’s not exciting fresh of fun- it’s mediocre and listenable
Lovin it!! This song was on replay on my commute to/from work. Mimi came through!
Why can’t she just give a power ballad or two? These songs just don’t speak to me. They’re cool and all. ButI where’s the power ballad?
I love this. Sounds good to me
