Jennifer Lopez‘ decision to tribute the Motown empire at last night’s Grammy awards was met by praise from some and confusion from others.
Now, the hours following the electrifying performance have seen viewers use some social media to celebrate the performance as others point and laugh at it.
Which side of the fence do you fall on?
I was really curious what #Motown would look like on @JLo — she pulled it off! It was exciting, elegant and sexy. I want her sparkly knee-high boots, too.

Find out below…
I gotta to go to bed but really @Jlo shook her ass and did SALSA for the Motown tribute. I don’t mind ass shaking and salsa but it wasnt right for Motown. ??? how will we survive. pic.twitter.com/FWb3avlB8U

Black people R Upset! (Logic) The Singer of the #Motown tribute should have had the vocals to Have Been on Motown Back in the Day. I felt it was more of a tribute to @JLo and the Theme was Motown. I’m not mad at JLo, To be on a World Stage representing One of Musics greatest eras

It’s just shameful to see the idiocy and racist b.s. coming out some of my Black Folk regarding @JLo performance at the #Grammys I’m ashamed at some of you idiots. Not only did she rock it, you numbnuts should be grateful she has love for the #Motown Classics. #MotownTribute

Dear @JLo stay away from Motown…
— London Pentaholic (@PentaholicLDN) February 11, 2019
I guess people are starting to realise that @JLo can’t sing. Sexy dancer though but those Motown notes… no! #Motown #grammys

Dear #GRAMMYs the women of #Motown were class acts in gowns & beautiful performances. While I like @JLo, this was not the right platform for the tweaking on MJ. #Inapproiptate A Black Women would not have performed the opening Latina song? Wrong choice-M #BlackHistoryMonth
— InspireByMikaeli (@TheInspireGal) February 11, 2019
Honestly, @JLo performance at the #GrammyAwards was completely disrespectful to the legacy of Motown, disrespectful to Black people, and OUR culture. Shame on the Grammys for booking her in the first place!

Okay @JLo u killed that Motown ‘s performance at the @RecordingAcad bowdown to the best performer in the world . DAMN
— Mohamed Choghri (@MoeChoghri) February 11, 2019
I hope you don’t block me for this but I’ve always felt JLo was a better actress and dancer than a singer. Motown songs need strong, unique vocals, so I just felt it should have been someone with great Motown pipes. Black, white or purple

Jennifer Lopez said nigga in the I’m Real remix ft. Ja Rule (while lipsyncing over Ashanti’s vocals), she’s said “all lives matter”, and she did this Motown “tribute” knowing that she was taking an opportunity away from black artists. Jlo has no respect for black folks. #GRAMMYs pic.twitter.com/LgQYk0SljI

But she did sooooooo great @JLo https://t.co/XmsQZJBQlQ

Your thoughts?
no bueno… mi gente pendeja no puede
SHE WASN’T EVEN SINGING LIVE. IT WAS MOSTLY A PRE-RECORDED TRACK. ALL THE ELEGANT BLACK TALENT AND THEY USED THIS “SHOW-GIRL” TO LIP AND DANCE TO LEGENDARY MOTOWN TALENT — SMH A MESS. SHE IS SO OVER-RATED.
LMAO.
Yeah…salsa is not part of plan.
She did great
Fantasia? Boyz II Men? Diana Ross? Jacksons? Stevie Wonder? Gladys Knight? Jennifer Lopez with her Lip Singing Salsa Routine was NOT Motown. She was given the gig because they wanted a Song/Dance professional. That’s it. WHAT MOTOWN ARTIST TWERKED AT 50 YEARS OLD????????? STFU she was a mess — HAVING GREAT WEAVE and a Nice Body DOES NOT MEAN SHE DID A GREAT PERFORMANCE. stfu
I can’t even hate. She did that! It was the best performance of the night.
I think we all forgot that Motown didn’t only have big voices. There were so many talent o Motown who just had bops but was strong singers. JLO did a great job in putting together those type of records. Over all 8 out 10
It was so rude of her not to acknowledge berry gordy who was sitting front row during her performance not listing him as an innovator of the label but however, her performance was on.
Omg im shook u used my comments on twitter ?❤️️ She is a queen
That performance was not a representation of MoTown it was Jlo’s Vegas show with the music of MoTown. This tribute was one big fail period. MoTown represented class and elegance and this performance brought none of that. This was just opportunity for Jlo to show us how thirsty she is for the limelight and on bigger scale how subpar she is without all the bells and whistles.
Don’t care for what black people thing they just hating on Jlo …Jlo is a power house and a force
Except for her vocals and staying in tune
Newsflash dummy, black folks aren’t the only ones who acknowledge the fact that Jennifer Lopez cannot sing. Stop making excuses.
Controversial or not she SSSSLAYED! How she sound better at 50 than what she used to on her 30s? ? but I did feel like it was a bit of a self-serving performance rather than a tribute
Next it will be Britney tributing Whitney’s 10 year anniversary and Justin Beiber singing a tribute to Luther Vandross.
These people who said she did good are idiots! It’s not about not liking Jennifer as an artist, or that she’s from latin decent, she just isn’t the caliber of singer to put respect on Motown’s name.
Had you given me a Jessie J or JoJo so sing these hits i would’ve had less complaints… a lot less.
I think there were artists who may have been better suited for the tribute. Having said this, JLO did not disappoint. Would we have been disappointed if Teena Marie had performed it if she were still living. Would we have shunned her even though her music clearly resonates with R&B and motown? Music transcends color, race and ethnicity or at least it should. I, personally, wanted someone else not because JLO is Latina but I think others would have been better. However, I was pleasantly surprised that JLO’s performance was decent.
You missed the memo; this wasn’t about Jennifer’s performance skills it was about her lack of vocal ability. So to answer your question, NO folks would not have been upset if Teena Marie was alive and did the tribute because:
A-Teena Marie was a bonafide SOUL SINGER, not pop/soul or pop/r&b.
B-Teena Marie was an actual Motown artists signed to the label.
Again, this had nothing to do with JLo being Latina. The only ones trying to make it about her race are the ones defending her mess of a tribute; everyone else’s issue is the fact they chose a non-singer to represent an Iconic music label, not out of respect for the label, but solely to drum up controversy for ratings. Nobody gives a sh*t about her race except for the ones using it as an excuse to defend her.
The bulk of Motown’s music was pop/soul, so what are you talking about? Teena’s 2nd biggest hit, “Square Biz”, was pop!! Was Diana Ross more pop or more soul? What about the Marvelletes? The Ronettes? I could go on and on. You have to be kidding right now.
What she did was prerecorded and it felt like it, her soprano was too west side story IMO…??♂️
Lol glad I took a hard pass on watching last night.
I actually thought it was pretty good. She wouldn’t have been my first choice, but it was a first rate performance. Like Smokey said, “Motown was for everybody.” So, you don’t have to be black to tribute the music.
To everyone saying black people are haters, the actual reason for Motown was to give black singers a voice and platform in a time when they weren’t getting shine. J lo’s performance was the textbook definition of cultural appropriation because her “tribute” included her putting salsa dancing and music in her performance, when that was NOT what Motown was about.
You are way off. How is it cultural appropriation when she was true to her own Latin culture?? Appropriation is when you copy cultural elements from another race and without the invitation to do so. Where did J.Lo do that? Besides, she was invited and Berry Gordy had the final say as to who performed in the tribute. He gave Jennifer a standing ovation, so I’d say he was pretty pleased.
Jennifer was amazing! She added her own inspiration to it to connect with her Hispanic and Latino fans. They always say ‘make it your own’ and that’s exactly what she did. Great job!!
Wow haters really gon hate! This was awesome! Jlo slayed as only jlo can! In addition, Jlo IS a woman of color! She is not black but she is a woman of color and should be embraced by OUR community. We’ve got to do better and appreciate our people. All we read and hear about is us putting each other down. Nothing seems to be good enough for the community of color. People aren’t brown enough, black enough or aren’t appreciated because of the most idiotic reasons.
Motown wasn’t salsa dancing, lifts and tricks. Motown was GREAT voices and soulful singing.
Jlo for next Superbowl …watch only black people will be hating for that to happen
Then Beyoncé and Rihanna should stop their white cultural appropiation for having at some point in their lives artificial blonde hair… that’s white people stuff… not black people…seriously guys…this situation is getting ridiculous… Everybody can listen or be be influenced by motown’s music…she did her best and did a homage to the motown legacy in her own terms which is in no way illegal…
