It’s been over 20 years since RuPaul (born RuPaul Charles) broke ground and barriers with his VH1 talk show, but now the 58-year-old is about to do it again – this time on FOX.

With the 1996 premiere of his first talk show, VH1’s ‘The RuPaul Show,’ Charles became the first openly gay host of a national television program in the United States.
Now, after a two decade absence from the format (despite continuing a successful, Emmy-awarded relationship with VH1 courtesy of the hit show ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’), Ru’s highly anticipated return to daytime talk – simply titled ‘Rupaul’ – will premiere this summer.
Beginning a limited three week test run on June 10, the eponymous venture will be broadcast on select FOX stations across the country.
“Now more than ever before we need a global voice that will help everyday people navigate this unique time in history,” Charles said in a statement. “Not only do I want to be a part of that conversation, I want to help facilitate it.”

ALL OF THIS. I was so angry at Tyra for walking away from her show and leaving the door open for trash like Wendy Williams to come in. And you’re right, RuPaul won’t be any better. He’s made it perfectly clear that he’s part of the gay white man’s world now. Tyra definitely needs to come back.
I cannot stand RuPaul! He has absolutely no connection to the black community & I doubt very seriously that he even identifies as a black man. He is DISGUSTING & an utter disappointment to our community & generation at large.

I agree! He is an Uncle Tom and I find his rare moments when he ‘acts black’ as racist and stereotypically degrading to blacks.
On the other hand, I do not think he was treated nicely by straight blacks in the 90s. I remember many black shows like Martin and entertainers like Lil Kim making fun of him. I can see why he married a white man and lives a life surrounded by white people. At least he feels ‘loved’ or ‘supported’ by them. I wonder if black gays look up to him. I doubt it because he is an Uncle Tom who won’t do a thing for blacks (unless he is forced to by ratings or PR pressure).

Sweetie, that was over 20 years ago, he does not love being black. And the fact that drag race has been on for 10 years with only 3 black winners, a black person finally wins All Stars but still has to share it with a white girl, and when he won his Emmy and was joined onstage by the entire crew of drag race and there wasn’t a single person of color besides him on that stage can attest to that. RuPaul sold both his soul and his black card to go mainstream. That’s not self love.
