Predictions Are In: Khalid’s ‘Free Spirit’ Set To Be Singer’s First Billboard 200 #1

Published: Sunday 7th Apr 2019 by Rashad

Since bursting onto the scene with his 2017 released, top 5 debut album – ‘American Teen’ – R&B crooner Khalid has been a staple in the chart’s top 40 as both feature and leading act.  Seeing that success trickle over onto the October 2018-released EP, ‘SunCity,’ the commercial response clearly served as indication fans were ready for the singer’s sophomore LP.

Answering the call with ‘Talk’ & ‘Better’ – the leading singles from his second album, ‘Free Spirit’ (April 5) – both tunes received favorable critical and commercial responses as they peaked inside the top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 at #40 and #16 respectively [to date].  Now, with over 24 hours separating their parent album from its official unveiling, industry analysts are able to predict how many units the product will shift its first 7 days of availability.

Look inside to see the numbers:

Khalid’s ‘Free Spirit’

First Week SPS (predicted):  145-165k

First Week Pure Sales (predicted):  50-65k

Debut Billboard 200 placement (predicted):  #1

If the figures above ring true they will not only render the 21-year-old’s first run atop the Billboard 200, but will also be his highest first week sales to date.  His inaugural album eventually reached platinum status, but debuted with 37,000 SPS its first week.

It’s been a slow music year so far, so not surprised.

That’s not bad, considering he’s an alternative. R&B artist. Good for him

Pretty good in today’s music sales climate. Not to mention he has youth and streaming in his favor.

    He’s overrated

Maybe. If the talent on the charts was on the level that it should be, he wouldn’t stand a chance. But that’s just how it is these days.

Music industry is in big trouble. Not 1 hit song and the album is going to debut at number 1. Back in the day you have to have at least 2 or 3 hit songs for your album to debut at the top of the charts.

Not true some artist back in the day wouldn’t have a hit song but would sell an album nonetheless, for instance Britney “in the zone” album debuted at 1 with 700k, but the single with Madonna on manage to get to 36 on the the hot 100, but it’s so many other times where an album would seek better than the singles. Back than you album artist like Britney & single artist like Rihanna who didn’t really sell big with albums despite having big singles
