Taylor Swift may be all about spreading positivity on new album ‘Lover,’ but she’s not in the best of moods today.
As reported, Scooter Braun – music mogul and manager to stars such as Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande – purchased the singer’s master’s as part of a broader business acquisition (see: Big Machine record label).
Swift is not impressed and she’s taken to venting publicly. She didn’t hold back either.
“For years I asked, pleaded for a chance to own my work. Instead I was given an opportunity to sign back up to Big Machine Records and ‘earn’ one album back at a time, one for every new one I turned in. I walked away because I knew once I signed that contract, Scott Borchetta would sell the label, thereby selling me and my future. I had to make the excruciating choice to leave behind my past. Music I wrote on my bedroom floor and videos I dreamed up and paid for from the money I earned playing in bars, then clubs, then arenas, then stadiums.
Some fun facts about today’s news: I learned about Scooter Braun’s purchase of my masters as it was announced to the world. All I could think about was the incessant, manipulative bullying I’ve received at his hands for years.
Like when Kim Kardashian orchestrated an illegally recorded snippet of a phone call to be leaked and then Scooter got his two clients together to bully me online about it. (See photo) Or when his client, Kanye West, organized a revenge porn music video which strips my body naked. Now Scooter has stripped me of my life’s work, that I wasn’t given an opportunity to buy. Essentially, my musical legacy is about to lie in the hands of someone who tried to dismantle it.
This is my worst case scenario. This is what happens when you sign a deal at fifteen to someone for whom the term ‘loyalty’ is clearly just a contractual concept. And when that man says ‘Music has value’, he means its value is beholden to men who had no part in creating it.
When I left my masters in Scott’s hands, I made peace with the fact that eventually he would sell them. Never in my worst nightmares did I imagine the buyer would be Scooter. Any time Scott Borchetta has heard the words ‘Scooter Braun’ escape my lips, it was when I was either crying or trying not to. He knew what he was doing; they both did. Controlling a woman who didn’t want to be associated with them. In perpetuity. That means forever.
Thankfully, I am now signed to a label that believes I should own anything I create. Thankfully, I left my past in Scott’s hands and not my future. And hopefully, young artists or kids with musical dreams will read this and learn about how to better protect themselves in a negotiation. You deserve to own the art you make.
I will always be proud of my past work. But for a healthier option, Lover will be out August 23.”
Wow.
get over it b*tch this is the music business, this is how it goes. was there no value to the work the label put in? no one would’ve heard those all songs. she got just as rich as he did
I would probably be upset too, but she comes across as a whiny b**** in this (like normal, tbh). Anything for her to stay relevant with a new album coming out… calling out old stuff with kanye and kim, and referring to the video as revenge p***? Girl get real and stop feeling sorry for yourself for once and trying to get everyone else to cry with you. She was 15 when she signed, but she’s not 15 now. This “feel sorry for me” act can only go so far. Her role is that she acts weak, but now she is surprised to get stepped on. Just delusional. She is grown and has the potential to do whatever she wants. She needs to stop acting like a 15 year old spoiled brat and transform into the boss that most people in her position know to be involuntarily.
Yes yes yes yes YESSS PREACH bich!!! #ALLFACTS
She’ll be alright.
I’m so tired of her pasty a$$. What makes her anymore special then the countless blacks that never owned their music or had the chance to get first dibs to purchase their masters. Entitled, whiny, Perdue unseasoned a$$!
So because she white and “pasty” and wants to own her life’s work, she’s whiny and entitled? If she were black, you’d say different? What is the hate these days for anyone white and successful? Praise success for EVERYONE. Regardless of race.
I said what I said!
Girl bye!
Ok now.. Taytay is dropping some piping hot tea on this last day of Pride month!!!! Im here for it! Though not a stan I appreciate Taylor in the pop zeitgeist of the last decade. Girl has some undeniable bops in her catalogue. Like many t*** pop sensations before her though, the music industry used her and capitalized on her middle of the road appeal to young, white pop music fans. I do understand her frustration because unlike most of the other t*** pop idols who preceded her, like her or not, Taylor actually CREATED her music. Her first two records were either solely written by her or feature just one other co-writer. Speak Now she wrote entirely oh her own, no assistance. Red was mostly solely written by her. 1989 and Reputation her two most recent pop records are clearly more collab-heavy due to the pop influence but she still is credited on every track producing/writing. Essentially, more than any other female pop star at the moment, Swift is solely responsible for at least 60-70 percent of her biggest hits.
Basically, what I’m trying to say is put aside your dislike of Taylor’s music/persona. She deserves to own what SHE created from her pen game. Any published writer does. Period.
And I do believe there is a level of sexism at play here…when is it not in the mostly perverse, sexist music industry?
SN: I never realized she hated Scooter Braun and her former label owner.. but now it makes sense w/ the Kanye connection I guess. I also didnt know Scooter managed him.
Gurl please. ?? You make it all sound so ONE SIDED. Didn’t you become a millionaire and household name on said label since you were 15?? Didn’t they pay you millions in advances so you calorie afford the luxury you enjoy today? You don’t own your masters but don’t you. Ash cheques from writing royalties? Count it off as experience and move TF on with your whiny entitled ass. You do not wield the power to decide who buys your label – multi million dollar contracts are not negotiated based on ‘begging’ and ‘pleading’ you’re older and wiser now – get a job on the discovery channel selling Crocs footwear and you won’t have this drama but you’ll be in your lane. ??
Off of music she wrote and produced. ? And the label got every penny they spent on her and more.
That’s why it’s a business, they invested upfront and now they get dividends on the backend.
Glad Rihanna owns her own masters ! The power of Rih!
she honestly only speaks on feminism and inconsistency when it applies to her. not to even mention the way in which she rewards members of the grammy panel in order to get more grammy’s. she profits off the same industry that she is complaining about
I think it’s so sad to take Way her legacy! Scooter Braun is so cruel! And having his puppets like Bieber play along and Taunt someone isn’t ok! Disgusting!
I’m not even a Taylor fan but even I can see how nasty this is!
Taking away someone’s legacy they have created isn’t ok!
#GiveTaylorBackHerLegacy! Needs to be shared x
She is aware her whiny victim card expired a few years ago? She is not the first or last not to own her own music.. the likes of prince and Micheal Jackson had careers ruined and death bestowed on them for daring to own their s***!! She needs to stfu.
Her music is annoying. Still the lesson is clear for artists and creators of all disciplines:
OWN YOUR OWN ISH.
AVOID MIDDLE-MEN when possible.
OWN YOUR POWER.
BEWARE of sleazy, self-serving, recessive-gene carrying, men.
ok but this https://open.spotify.com/album/4J0MJ1huck3pcCAAaBYwSK?si=1jsp8gCeTmGE4gVWLVaJIw
Moral of this story as an artist, you must own your own music. The glamour and fame is cool but you have to be business wise
I agree with her about an artist owning the art THEY create. Seems like they wanted her crappy work and didn’t care how they went about obtaining it.
Taylor has the right to be grossed out!
She has a point.
Yet, she laments the loss of a catalog that sold millions. Had those albums sold poorly, I doubt she’d be THAT gutted.
She knows her future efforts won’t be able to match or surpass those sales. Hence the feeling of having been duped.
In her defense (and despite her signing the dotted line on however unfair that contract was), she has every right to want more money from her own work.
I have new respect for her for having dealt with such pressures privately.
Taylor Swift is ridiculous. She signed a contract and because of that contract blew up, and now she is mad. This happens everyday in normal professional careers. Everything you do for work become property of the company. I am unsure why she why she is being done wrong when she and her parents signed the contract to begin with.
I haven’t ever really cared for her BUT this actually makes me feel sorry for her. She should absolutely be able to own what’s SHE makes… this is sad to see and even sadder bc it happens to so many of the biggest stars to the up and coming musicians… I hope she is able to reclaim her work bc— think whatever you may about her music— but it’s something she made and she should have the right to own it. This is truly messed up.
