Usher’s ‘Climax’ Writer Challenges Diplo’s Claim Song Was Influenced By The Weeknd

Published: Thursday 9th Apr 2020 by Rashad

‘I Feel It Comin’ crooner The Weeknd felt Usher‘s 2012 hit, ‘Climax,’ was strangely similar to some of the music he’d created the year prior – namely his 2011 song, ‘House of Balloons.’

In a tell-all interview with Variety (as we reported here), the 30-year-old asserted his entry into the Pop music realm not only changed the genre but also influenced the work of a number of artists whose works followed.

But, while Elijah Blake – the man credited with writing the lyrics to the Usher song in question – took to social media Wednesday (April 8) to slam the notion of copying (click here to read more on that), Diplo (the tune’s producer) is siding with Weeknd (like we reported here).

Once Dip’s comments got to the desk of Blake, the singer-songwriter had a fiery response.  See it inside:

After Diplo said the above, Elijah responded with:

Look below to hear the tunes and tell us if you note any likeness:

All I’m getting from this is the various people that worked on this song had different influences. And the weekend might have influenced one component of the song is it really something to argue about?

I’m bored. This s*** is wack now. Usher is in a different class compared to The Weeknd. Both are talented but let’s be real, ushers stats outweigh The Weeknd at the moment. Let it go. Damn.

ZERO likeness! Weeknd’s track sounds like a team of producers couldn’t decide what direction to go in and ended up throwing it all together and calling it art. It’s a noisy mess is what it is. Usher’s song is much more clean.

Ha! Usher’s tracks as of late are the ones that lack urgency, focus and direction ? Hopefully that changes cause his ish has been BEREFT! Throw it at a wall is that song OMG ? Bye!

Actually, everyone needs to calm down because “House of balloons” is based on and samples a song from 1980 by Siouxsie and the Banshees. So neither of these two songs is 100% original!!!!

Usher “the Living Legend” Raymond should’ve kept his got damn mouth shut and allowed this child to throw his tantrum. Diamond artists have business squabbling with platinum lessers.

    Gosh, it’s becoming embarrassing now

Go read what Diplo said in 2012 about Climax here (that he took his inspiration from minimalist techno & Atlanta stripclubs music, not from Abel) :

Now ask yourself why that producer, who works now for The Weeknd (Diplo has just finished the remixes of Blinding lights for the expanded edition of After Hours), has changed his tune :

Diplo is a liar who says whatever pleases his client of the moment, especially if that client is “hot” on the charts.

Seems plausible, but then why would Diplo even open his mouth at all? He was already under contract to make those remixes so it ain’t like he wasn’t gonna get paid if he didn’t vouch for Abel. Diplo gains nothing from this, and Abel ain’t got the power to cancel him.

I’m starting to think this is a marketing ploy bc like Elijah said.. the timelines don’t match. I’m not mad bc I’m a huge Usher supporter and the convo is definitely Supporting my big brudda

House of Ballons sounds like a bunch of noise, with studio high notes. Ushers is clean and he could sing it live. I don’t see Climax as a “dark” song. The Weeknd did not invent falsetto.

Both songs are wack In my opinion
