“You broke my heart, so I broke your car.”
Today’s From The Vault pick comes courtesy of vocal powerhouse Jazmine Sullivan. This week’s selection is the break-up anthem ‘Bust Your Windows.’
The 2008 release was issued as Sullivan’s second single lifted from her debut album ‘Fearless.’ It relays the way a scorned-woman handles her love interest’s infidelity. And that is by trashing his well-beloved car.
Produced by Salaam Remi, the track peaked at #31 on the US Hot 100 and #4 on the R&B/Hip-Hop tally.
Its music video sees Jaz discover that her boyfriend had been cheating on her, then entering a rage which leads her to destroy all of his belongings, from his watches and wine glasses to his vinyl collection – though she never specifically busts his windows per se.
A year after its release, ‘Windows’ was covered on hit show ‘Glee’ by fellow vocal supernova Amber Riley. It was a true testament to the song’s impact and legacy as it wasn’t that many R&B songs featured on the Fox series.
From the onset, it was Jazmine’s storytelling abilities in her writing that set her apart from her peers… that and her undeniable gem of a voice.
With her latest project ‘Heaux Tales’ making waves, who knows what 2021 has in store for the artist.
All in all, it’s good to have you back, Ms. Sullivan.
A hit
