Major! Billboard Hot 100 To Count Facebook Music Video Streams

Published: Wednesday 3rd Mar 2021 by Sam

Streaming has unquestionably remolded the music landscape. So much so that it has become the key metric in determining charts across the globe.

In light of this, Billboard has announced a major shake-up of its system.

For, the music body has revealed that it will begin factoring in Facebook music video views to its charts.

Full story below…

Beginning March 12 and reflecting in the chart dated March 27, licensed music video views accrued from the social media site will impact where songs place on the Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard 200 other charts.

There are few caveats.

Only licensed music video views will count. Views from user-generated videos will not.

Facebook videos will be included among On-Demand Video totals.

The move forms part of a measured effort by Billboard to reflect the effect streaming is continuing to have on the industry – having first incorporated video views into the singles chart equation in February 2013. Such views were added to the album chart equation in 2020.

It’s also considered a possible game-changer.

For the longest, YouTube has been the key vehicle for video view impact on the charts. With Facebook now in the mix, its unique skew could tilt the pendulum in the favor of acts whose Facebook momentum outpaces their YouTube resonance.

It’s clear labels have been aware of the incoming change, as many major acts have been uploading full music videos to their pages.

Time will tell how this re-shapes the charts.

I’ll be glad when people stop equating quality with quantity. We see it all the time on this site, saying someone is a flop for getting hundreds of thousands of streams and so smh. People shouldn’t care about these charts anymore…

So with albums and cd singles extinct how do you suggest how to track chart placements ???

It’s a business so quantity matters. That’s what pays the bills. If you’re not between the ages of 14 and 25, most of the music on these charts isn’t being made for you.
