After years of waiting on official news related to the arrival of Aaliyah‘s discography on streaming outlets, her faithful fans were stunned in early August when Barry Hankerson – the late singer’s uncle and founder of her label, Blackground Records – announced her soundtracks, compilation albums, and studio efforts would be added to streaming platforms in the weeks that followed.
The commercial response to the streaming delivery of her sophomore album, ‘One in a Million’ (made available August 20), was so great the project reached a new Billboard 200 peak – nearly 25 years after its initial release.
Her tertiary LP, 2001’s ‘Aaliyah,’ was re-released September 10 and – if industry analyst predictions are to be believed – is on track to even better commercial fanfare.

20 years after becoming her first and only Billboard 200 chart-topper, the ‘Rock the Boat’-rearing LP is set to rock the charts once more. Thanks to handsome consumption on Spotify, Apple Music, and iTunes (as we reported here), ‘Aaliyah’ is pacing toward being the highest-charting R&B effort of the week.
What’s more, with its projected 26,500 units in total sales (SPS), it will best the first digital-week sales of the ‘Romeo Must Die’ soundtrack as well as the 25,000 SPS that hoisted ‘One in a Million’ to top 10 status just two weeks ago. If the prediction rings true, ‘Aaliyah’ will bring the GRAMMY nominee’s best-performing week on digital platforms yet.

One in a Million changed the sound of R&B. 4 Page Letter, If Your Girl Only Knew, One in a Million etc. I guess you had to be there.
Agreed. She introduced the Timbaland sound to the masses with One in a Million. She was the first artist to give him and Missy a chance. They even state this themselves.

Ironic how “Her Best Album” reviews TODAY weren’t said when the album first came out. There were a lot of mixed reviews in fact. Even though I was a kid, I do recall people saying this wasn’t her best back then or it was just a solid album, and some only liked her single choices.
I’m glad after all of these years, people can now appreciate this body of work. You could probably even say she may have been ahead of her time with the sound because many of those young and super young ears are fully grown now.

The album got rave reviews. Check Rolling Stone and a few others. They compared it to Janet’s All for U and DC Survivor albums.

This is absolutely MY FAVORITE ALBUM OF ALL TIME WHEN IT COMES TO MY CHILDHOOD!!! I’ve played it everyday even right now as I type this!!!! I couldn’t wait for this!!!! And 20 years later the music sounds even better than I remember. I was 10 back then and now at 30 I understand what all the lyrics mean. This was truly ahead of its time!!!! The music is TIMELESS and sounds so fresh to be 20 years old!!!
