“I Try” singer Macy Gray tried and succeeded at putting a unique spin on the U.S. national anthem when she took to Cleveland to help kick off the NBA All-Star Game Sunday (February 20).
The GRAMMY-winning songstress, long lauded for her smoky vocals, got quite the polarizing response from anxious game goers and viewers as she tackled the historic tune like only she can.
Curious to see how she fared? Look inside:
Her performance garnered mixed reaction from commenters, many of whom flocked to social media to weigh in. See the mixed reactions below:
I Enjoyed it and I happen to love her m, that’s how her voice naturally sounds. She has a very cottony texture. so what’s the talk ?
EXACTLY.
Her hair looks crazy as her mediocre vocals 😂🤣🤣 crackhead on the loose y’all💅🏾
She still looks and sounds much better than your busky dirty TRAÑÑY a$s
F*** outta here lice head
Drink cleaning liquids goofy traànñy 💋
Whoever picked her is a dumb a s s
Kelis, please tell yo mom don’t sing
We all know what she sounds like so how dafuck is this news
UMM! Macy always sound like someone’s drunk auntie singing karaoke at the cookout.
She looked intoxicated
She hit all of her notes. This has been her style since day one. I’m confused about what people think went wrong.
Gen z probably don’t even remember her and the media is very much ‘if a tree falls in a forest and Gen z doesn’t hear it, did it even fall?’
Nailed it! The mess that gets a pass nowadays is mind-blowing.
I can’t reply to your second comment for some reason but completely agree on THEEEE MESS we see on our screens on a regular basis… but Ms Macy is where people draw the line?
It’s also the pretending to have taste that is annoying.
Ummm I expected it to be horrible. What was wrong with it?! She sang it her way, her style. I thought this was gonna be a Fergie sized disaster or something.
I love her voice. She’s always sounded this way, it’s her style. They just wanted a white woman or a “vocalist”. Not every has to sing like your favs.
The black Ronald McDonald 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Her rendition was refreshing and soothing ..
I see no problem..
She is a black national treasure.
Underrated.
This song is meant to have as many renditions and styles as the country has diversity..
Y’all big lipped big nosed n***** talking s*** are coons
I actually enjoyed it!
Don’t nobody wanna hear Jennifer Hudson loud ass Macy Gray did great…
She always sounded like this 🙄 I enjoyed her version of it.
That was actually beautiful though…. 🙂
You can tell Lebron wanted to bust out laughing 😂😂😂 Macy sounded good until she tried this high notes
I absolutely loved it. I found her tone and texture to be simply soothing. She almost sang me to sleep. Simply beautiful Macy.
Macy was on key, stuck to the original melody with her own twist and kept it short and sweet. I don’t see an issue. I actually enjoyed it. Twitter is so miserable.
We need to get Fergie back up there 😂😂😂
At this point I feel like what more did we expect from her. I honestly feel like she was on par with anything I would expect from her. So for me this is not out of her elements. And technically the notes weren’t wrong it’s just her voice is an acquired taste. But she definitely gave me exactly what I would’ve expected none the less!
There was nothing wrong with that. People are just programmed to associate the national anthem with a single type of vocal interpretation i.e upper register belting, riffs and falsetto and so feel something is missing when they dont get that. She did just fine in terms of what shes capable of.
I liked it… that’s her signature sound.. very unique
i think she was perfect! like, what were people expecting?!?!?
that is her voice, and that is how she became famous.
i personally loved the albuem when she came out with “I Try”,…. and that song randomly came on the other day randomly on my amazon, and i was brought to life
