With over 100 million records sold, EGO (EMMY, GRAMMY, OSCAR) winner Cher boasts a six-decade career that stands as one of the most celebrated and revered in entertainment history.
Having set a bar in many facets from music to fashion and more, the singer-actress is no stranger to seeing her name listed parallel to acts who arrived to the scene after her.
However, it was her recent response to being likened to current Pop hitmaker Dua Lipa that suggests she doesn’t always appreciate the comparisons.
Look below if you’ve missed any of the action.
Lipa’s Disco-tinged offerings and her fashion-forward style have often lent comparisons to many top divas of yesteryear, characteristics that were reiterated recently when a fan suggested the ‘Future Nostalgia’ singer is the “Cher of her generation.”
Once the ‘If I Could Turn Back Time’ icon got word of the likening, she took time to take to Twitter.
“How many years are in a generation,” she asked.
While some took the question literally, others believed the ‘Believe’ singer was dissing Dua and launched a fiery attack in her defense.
Look below to see highlights of the discourse that ensued after Cher’s post.
As of time reported, Cher nor Dua have responded to the hoopla.
Well, Dua is the THANG now so she’s untouchable💅🏾 Cher ain’t got s h I t on her. That old h** hasn’t charted since early 2000s 😱
I think what she was getting at, how are y’all saying she’s this generation’s Cher, when Cher is still around in THIS GENERATION. And the question she asked did not warrant all that shade and attacking. Twitter is so immature. Ppl can’t take light little comments and questions like the one she asked, little fäggots, grow a bällsäck
Slur? Oh, you’re like them.
She should not be likened to Cher. She is nowhere close to making the impact that Cher has. And that’s the problem with today’s generation; they either don’t know or don’t respect the history and accomplishments of artists who came before. Then industry people are making up stupid stuff like Harry Styles being the new prince of pop – none of these artists are doing anything legendary. Breaking a Billboard record in the digital age is nothing to brag about.
YESSSSSS. This is the best comment on here!!!! The charts in the digital streaming era really don’t mean anything these days compared to LEGENDS who had people PAYING for their music. MOST Gen Z really get on my nerves!!!! Soooooo glad I’m a millennial!!!! The difference between us and them is we were smart enough to acknowledge the accomplishments of the past and present. Cher came out well before my time but as a 90s baby I have known who Cher was for yeeeeeears!!!! These new kids really don’t know who LEGENDS of the past are and want to blame it on “oh who cares there old” and in my mind it’s like “Noooo you’re just stupid and your parents didn’t expose y’all to anything worthwhile”. Being a 90s kid did not give me the excuse to not know who Tina Turner was as a child or Jackson 5 as a child or even Sanford & Son and The Jefferson’s as a child. These kids just spoiled entitled and too lazy to even do some research and respect the past. I think Future Nostalgia was great but the only way I’m comparing Dua to Cher is because she looks like a younger version of her like she could be her daughter. But artistically and musically and impact and LONGEVITY absolutely not!!!!!
Cher is boring tho.
