Viola Davis Talks the Importance of Black Audiences Supporting ‘The Woman King’

Published: Monday 19th Sep 2022 by Sam

‘The Woman King’ is making mighty strides at the US box office but that hasn’t halted the hustle of Viola Davis.

Indeed, the Oscar, Emmy, and Tony Award winner stopped by The Breakfast Club today with co-star Thuso Mbedu and director Gina Prince-Bythewood to discuss the film and the process of bringing it to the big screen.

Based on a true story, ‘The Woman King’ centers on the narrative of General Nanisca (Davis) as she rears the next generation of recruits and readies them for war against an adversary hellbent on upheaving their lives.

And while it looks poised to premiere at #1 and has earned an A+ CinemaScore, Davis makes it clear that it was no easy feat getting the movie to the masses.
Speaking candidly, she detailed the various hurdles and stressed why it’s so important for audiences (especially Black audiences) to support the film (and films like it).

Well being feminine doesn’t ALWAYS work in a woman’s favors. Look at all the feminine foreign women flocking to America. Why aren’t their men doing more for them??

Women like Cardi B are enjoying all the perks and freedoms within’ societies and that’s only because women had to protest for it. The men didn’t offer it to them for their feminine grace.

Blame the men for treating the feminine women like 2nd class citizens and housing them under 3rd world conditions because of Re-LIE-gion.
