Despite ‘Wicked’ soaring into history books for becoming the highest-grossing musical film adaptation of a stageplay ever, the award season that followed its record-shattering run hasn’t been the kindest to its stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.
Though nominated for some of the industry’s biggest honors including the BAFTAs, Golden Globes, Critics Choice, and Screen Actors Guild Awards, both divas left each ceremony emptyhanded – a series of losses that continued for Grande who missed out on the Best Supporting Actress trophy at the 2025 Academy Awards on Sunday night (March 2).
While hope was held out for Erivo, by the OSCARs’ end she too proved unsuccessful in breaking the unlucky losing streak.

Defeated alongside frontrunner Demi Moore as well as Fernanda Torres and Karla Sofia Gascon, Erivo watched Mikey Madison take home the grand prize of Best Actress.
Had she won, Cynthia would’ve been only the second Black woman in Academy Award history following Halle Berry to boast a victory in the category.
What’s more, the win would’ve made the ‘Wicked’ star only the 8th Black artist following Quincy Jones, James Earl Jones, John Legend, Whoopi Goldberg, Jennifer Hudson, Harry Belafonte, and Viola Davis to boast EGOT status (which refers to a person who has won the entertainment industry’s top awards – EMMY, GRAMMY, OSCAR, and TONY).
Remaining only an EGT winner, Cynthia was previously nominated for the Academy’s Best Original Song and Best Actress for her work aboard the 2019 critically acclaimed Harriet Tubman biopic.
