Mariah Carey‘s ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You‘ is not only an annual dominator of the Hot 100 but also the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
Sitting at a whopping 18x Platinum at the organization for sales of 18 million, the yuletide classic shines as the highest-certified female song in history overall.
Among non-holiday hits, however, the title consistently changes owners between Lorde‘s ‘Royals,’ Katy Perry‘s ‘Roar,’ and Miley Cyrus‘ ‘Party in the USA.’
Thanks to a recent update, the latter can now boast sole ownership.
Taking to press in late January, the RIAA revealed ‘Party’ had partied its way to 16x Platinum status – a mark that denotes sales equivalence of 16 million units in the United States.
The unofficial Independence Day anthem in America, the 2009-released tune elevated to the top spot just six months after entering a three-way tie with Perry and Lorde’s respective hits for the title of highest-certified female song in history.
The update pushes Miley’s cumulative single sales to 73.5 million in the U.S., making her one of the best-selling female artists ever.
Among women, only Lady Gaga (82.5 million), SZA (92.5 million), Ariana Grande (119 million), Katy Perry (121.5 million), Taylor Swift (137.5 million), Beyonce (161.5 million), and Rihanna (188 million) have sold more singles in the territory (as of time reported).
