Gladys Knight’s son has sounded his most alarming warning yet about the 82-year-old icon continuing to tour.
Shanga Hankerson claims Knight’s husband and manager, William McDowell, never truly intended to significantly reduce her performance schedule, despite mounting concern surrounding her wellbeing.
And his fear about where it could all lead is both stark and dark.

Speaking to The Detroit News, Hankerson said:
“He never intended to stop any tour dates, as you can see for yourself. My belief and fear is that he intends to literally try to work her until she passes away. And you can quote me on that.”
The comments arrive weeks after Knight announced she would be easing into fewer performances following concern sparked by footage from recent concerts.
McDowell previously acknowledged that the Empress of Soul has “good days and bad,” but stressed that she wants to continue singing and has not been diagnosed with dementia.
Hankerson has previously accused McDowell of elder abuse and forcing his mother to perform. Knight firmly rejected those allegations and maintained that she was “happy and healthy.”
There has, however, now been another notable development.
In a new statement, Knight signalled that her extensive touring days may indeed be drawing to a close:
“After heartfelt discussions with my team, I recognize that no matter how much I love lifting spirits in song, it’s time for the midnight train to make just a few more stops.”
She confirmed plans to complete her remaining 2026 performances before turning her attention to “new ventures” next year.
For now, the family divide over how the legendary singer’s final stretch on the road should look remains pronounced.
